    Where rice prices increased sharply in the past months, wheat prices have remained stable. The country has faced severe rains and flooding which resulted in extended damages. Food security of vulnerable people could be seriously affected by high cereal prices and agencies warn increasing food insecurity in the long term. The Government has implemented measures to support producers while extending the export ban until December 2010.

    Wheat and barley prices increased in August but remained below the peak of April 2010. Cereal prices remained stable in September. Bread price briefly increased by 10% on 25 September but went back to previous level after government's intervention; In early July, Moldova had a severe flood which caused damages in several districts affecting livelihoods, crops and infrastructures; Six percent of the population was estimated to be undernourished in 2005-07, according to the latest FAO figures wh ich were released in September; The prevalence of poverty in 2009 was 26%, level similar to 2008 and 2007, but the divide between urban and rural areas significantly increased.

    Prices of rice have generally been stable since the beginning of 2010, but are higher than the pre-high food crises period. Political tensions with Thailand continue. Moreover Cambodia's paddy crop was adversely affected by late rains and this could result in higher levels of food insecurity. GIEWS assessed that there is generally satisfactory food security throughout the country while other agencies agree that in the long term hunger will increase. The Government has implemented the Recta ngular Strategy-Phase II to scale up rice production and has expanded social protection programmes to support vulnerable people.
