The countries of the region are building a future with less Food Losses and Waste. The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the main political forum of the region, has included Food Loss and Waste Reduction as one component of its Action Plan for Food and Nutrition Security and the Eradication of Hunger 2025. There are countries with experience in Food Loss and Waste Reduction that are making good use of sub-products. Steps are underway to build the institutional framewor k for the formation of a Regional Alliance for Food Loss and Waste Reduction. There is concrete evidence of food losses and waste in specific value chains in a few countries, and there are also potential solutions. -
Book (stand-alone)Regional Strategic Framework Reducing Food Losses and Waste in the Near East & North Africa Region 2015Food losses and waste (FL&W) in the Near East & North Africa (NENA) region are high and contribute to reduced food availability, aggravated water scarcity, adverse environmental impacts and increased food imports, in an already highly import-dependent region. This document outlines a Regional Strategic Framework for reducing food losses and waste in the region. It responds to the FAO NERC-31 (in May 2012) recommendation calling on FAO to “assist member countries in addressing the key challenges of reducing food waste and losses by conducting comprehensive studies on impact of food losses and waste on food security in the region and in establishing a plan to reduce food losses and waste in the region by 50% within 10 years”. The components of the strategic framework are based on the region’s socio-economic context, gaps in combating FL&W, and availability of resources.

No results found.Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, it is not a given that reducing food loss and waste in any part of the world or point in the food supply chain will be equally effective in achieving these objectives, or be effective at all. Public strategies to reduce food loss and waste must be carefully designed in order to effectively meet food security and environmental sustainability objectives. Reducing food loss and waste can improve food security and nutrition, lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce pressures on natural resources such as land and water – but the effectiveness depends on where and how it is done. Different countries will have different priorities to guide their strategies. Focusing on initiatives that are well targeted to the objective pursued will be the key to successfully move forward on food loss and waste.
