Synopsis (short abstract) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Zhejiang University (ZJU) recognise the important role youth, startups, innovation and digital technologies play in modernising agriculture and creating employment in the agriculture and rural development sector. As a result, FAO and ZJU collaborating to foster an innovation and entrepreneurship environment for increased use of technologies and adoption of innovation. The collaboration aims to strengthen the capacity of policy makers, practitioners and smallholders, particularly youth and women, startups to harness digital tools and technologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of agrifood systems. This publication highlights the key activities and achievements of this collaboration.

    This paper examines how information and communications (ICT) technologies can contribute to decent employment of youth and women in the agrifood sector. In other regions, the widespread adoption and integration of ICTs has reduced information and transaction costs, improved service delivery, created new jobs, generated new revenue streams and saved resources. The analysis explores the current status of ICT uptake and certain age and gender-specific barriers before highlighting existing efforts to leverage digital technologies to create and facilitate access to decent employment for youth and women in agrifood systems. The paper aims to identify key entry points to ensure digital technologies are better leveraged in Near East and North Africa agrifood systems to foster decent employment in a way that is gender and age responsive..

    This document summarizes the online discussion Youth employment in agriculture as a solid solution to ending hunger and poverty in Africa, which was held on the FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum) from 16 July to 10 August 2018. The discussion was organized to gather views in advance of the 20-21 August regional conference “Youth Employment in Agriculture as a Solid Solution to Ending Hunger and Poverty in Africa: Engaging through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Entrepreneurship” in Kigali, Rwanda. The major thematic areas of the conference focused on youth and entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and the future of work in the rural economy. The FSN Forum online discussion provided an opportunity for young people engaged in agriculture and rural development across Africa to share related experiences, successes stories, lessons learned, and good practices, and to raise issues/questions that could be addressed at the Kigali conference.

    The collapse of the banana industry in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines led to high unemployment, particularly in rural areas, with national and rural unemployment rates at 13.3 percent and 13.7 percent respectively. Youth unemployment is even higher at 26.7 percent and 28.6 percent. Despite this, the underutilized agricultural and fisheries sectors offer potential for self-employment. However, young aspiring entrepreneurs face significant challenges in starting agribusinesses, such as difficulties in accessing land, facilities, equipment and capital.
