    Chile es reconocido internacionalmente como el hotspot mediterráneo, con alto nivel de endemismo, una cobertura de bosque nativo que representa el 18% de su superficie continental y más de 60 millones de hectáreas de áreas protegidas, entre otras características. Sin embargo, se menciona que podría aumentar la pérdida de los ecosistemas si el desarrollo económico no adopta progresivamente estándares de sostenibilidad que generen un menor impacto sobre la biodiversidad. Desde agosto de 2015 hasta mayo de 2020, la FAO implementó el proyecto con el objetivo ambiental global “desarrollar e implementar un Sistema integrado de monitoreo y evaluación de reservas de carbono y biodiversidad en ecosistemas forestales (SIMEF) en apoyo al Inventario nacional de gases de efecto invernadero (INGEI) y el diseño de políticas, normativas y prácticas de GFS incorporando el Programa REDD+ y la conservación de la biodiversidad en ecosistemas forestales”. El proyecto ha sentado bases metodológicas sólidas que mejoran el seguimiento de las condiciones de los ecosistemas forestales y, en consecuencia, se genera información más robusta y con mayor frecuencia. Se resalta la conformación de una estructura interinstitucional que apoyará la continuidad del SIMEF y la creación de una plataforma digital con cinco herramientas. El SIMEF es, hoy día, un programa regular del Estado chileno con un sistema de gobernanza y con presupuesto anual permanente. Por lo anterior, se podrá mantener y seguir fortaleciendo la sostenibilidad de los logros alcanzados en el proyecto. No obstante, se identificó un bajo nivel de apropiación del Sistema a nivel local, lo cual podría afectar su sostenibilidad.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022

    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.
