DocumentHigh-level meeting on the management strategy of transboundary plant pests and diseases in NENA region. Agenda
21-23 June 2023 Bari, Italy
2023Also available in:
No results found.Food security and safety in the NENA region are threatened by TPPD. Production of healthy plants, and sustainable food production systems in the NENA region requires specific solutions. In addition, proper policies and legislation, smart investments, regional collaboration, and planning are all key factors in ensuring higher efficiency levels and prompt responses to threats to food systems. To date, NENA countries are not adequately prepared to respond effectively to new and re-emerging transboundary plant pests and diseases. On this occasion, we urge NENA countries and plant protection experts to support establishing a regional program to face all risks posed by transboundary plant pests and diseases in the NENA region. -
BookletRegional strategy for sustainable management of transboundary plant pests and diseases in the Near East and North Africa region 2020
Also available in:
No results found.Plant pests and diseases threaten food security and nutrition around the world and seriously compromise food security in the in Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, with severe economic and environmental consequences. Most of these transboundary diseases are transmitted by propagative plant material and have no curative measures. The lack of harmonized certified propagation materials and relative diagnostic protocols in NENA countries increases considerably the spread of transboundary plant pest and diseases. Furthermore, the deficiency of correct control measure and applied quarantine control strategies, together with the absence of surveillance and early warning systems are the main factors causing the fast spread of those destructive agents. -
Book (series)Recognizing Peste des Petits Ruminants
A field manual
1999Also available in:
No results found. This booklet is one of a series prepared by FAO’s Emergency System for Transboundary Animal and Plant Pests and Diseases (EMPRES) Livestock Unit, as an aid to emergency preparedness for the major transboundary diseases of livestock. Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), which is also known as goat plague, is a disease of increasing importance in Africa and Asia wherever small ruminants form an important component of agricultural food production. It can affect a broad range of species, including some antelopes, as has already been seen in zoological garden collections but, fortunately, not in the wild. The disease was once thought to be a comparatively restricted problem in West Africa, but it is now known to extend throughout most of West, Central and East Africa, reaching eastwards through western and South Asia.
