No results found.Full utilization of Georgia’s agricultural potential is vitally important for the country’s economy. Agricultural development offers investment opportunities and is essential for the development of the country as a whole, and particularly for employment, growth, poverty reduction and food security. Against this background, the project aimed to support the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) to achieve targets defined in the Georgian Strategy for Agricultural Development of improved food security and higher competitiveness, effectiveness and sustainability of the country’s agriculture. The project complemented the FAO technical assistance project funded by the European Commission, “Capacity Development of the Ministry of Agriculture”. -

No results found.The project supported the development and rollout of a NAITS based on open source frameworks (to avoid present and future licensing costs), using modern digital technologies to minimize costs and provide the utmost flexibility, in compliance with the IT strategy of the MEPA. In parallel, the project deployed equipment for the intended users of the software and developed their capacities. As a result of project activities, the MEPA and NFA have the capacity to identify, register and track livestock animal health prevention and response measures. This was achieved through the design and development of electronic individual animal identification, registration and traceability software, which was tested through a number of pilots. A wide range of capacity development activities were undertaken, including training of slaughterhouse and NFA field veterinarians. In addition, the project successfully engaged in cooperation and exchange of knowledge and experiences with other countries in the region, in particular Armenia and Azerbaijan. -

No results found.In rural areas of Georgia, there are disparities in living conditions and access to essential services in comparison to urban areas. The growth of cities and the trend of out migration of rural populations, particularly youth, exacerbate these problems. There are also discrepancies between the labourconditions of men and women in rural areas of the country, because women tend to have limited access to opportunities, equipment, technology and land. This project was designed to enhance agricultural productivity, address gender disparities and improve access to services in rural areas by supporting the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) to implement the Strategy for Agricultural Development 2015-2020 and the Rural Development Strategy 2017-2020, both of which employ integrated approaches to rural development.

Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum
2023This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone. -

No results found.This report illustrates the food loss assessment studies undertaken along the maize, sunflower and beans supply chains in Uganda in 2015-16 and 2016-17. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste.
