Synopsis (short abstract) The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 821 million people in the world today are chronically hungry. The 2018 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) cites the changing climate as a key driver behind this sudden rise in the global number of hungry people in the world. While no other sector is more vulnerable to extreme and volatile weather events, food and agriculture provide numerous opportunities to adapt to, mitigate and build resilience to climate change. Realizing the commitments that countries made to transform food systems and promote sustainable agriculture approaches can still deliver a world without hunger and malnutrition by 2030. This publication presents FAO’s key messages on climate change and food security. It includes examples of FAO’s support to countries so they are better able to adapt to the impacts of climate change in the agricultural sectors. It also brings together FAO’s most up-to-date knowledge on climate change, including the tools and methodologies used to support countries’ climate commitments and action plans.

Climate change is a growing threat to the agriculture sectors: crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries. The negative effects on agricultural production and livelihoods of farmers, foresters and fisher folk are already being felt in many places. They will only get worse overtime.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that over 820 million people in the world today are chronically hungry. If temperatures continue to rise, then progress towards eradicating hunger and ensuring the sustainability of our natural-resource base to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be at risk. Without action, the changing climate will affect food availability and hinder access to food by disrupting the livelihoods of millions of rural people. Delivering on country commitments to transform food systems and promote sustainable agriculture can still create a world without hunger and malnutrition by 2030. But we must work urgently to transform agriculture through inclusive, multi-sectoral approaches that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience of people and the planet. This booklet illustrates FAO’s commitment to innovating in agriculture and transforming its practices to meet the climate challenge and the Sustainable Development Goals.
