    Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger is a global education initiative for creating greater awareness and understanding of hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity. By providing resources and practical tools, Feeding Minds aims to inform and inspire young people, their teachers and leaders, and people of all ages to seek solutions to reduce hunger and malnutrition in their families, their communities and in the world. Founded by a group of 10 international partners and non-profit organizations, Feeding Minds is spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the U.S. National Committee for World Food Day. Together, the Feeding Minds partners have created a global classroom and interactive discussion forum on key aspects of hunger, nutrition and food security. The Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger book is intended for use by teachers around the world, who can adapt and refine the materials, as necessary, to meet the needs of their students and fit the particular circumstances and conditions of their classroom facilities. Three easy-to use teaching modules have been developed for each of three levels of education – primary, intermediate, and secondary – all of which cover, in varying degrees of complexity, the following topics: What are Hunger and Malnutrition? Who Is Malnourished? Why Is There Hunger in the World? and What Can We Do To Help End Hunger and Malnutrition? Background information and additional resources, as well as activities and discussion points, are provided to assist teachers in studying these topics with their students.

    Moçambique é um país de baixa renda, com quase 70% da população a viver em zonas rurais. Os agricultores sofrem com a falta de acesso à tecnologia e a serviços técnicos qualificados. O país é também extremamente vulnerável aos fenómenos naturais cada vez mais prevalecentes, como os ciclones Dineo, Idai e Kenneth, que destruíram cultivos e infra-estruturas agrícolas entre 2017 e 2019. O país enfrenta desafios na implementação de instrumentos normativos para a integração de práticas de Adaptação às Mudanças Climáticas no sector agrícola. O Governo de Moçambique, a Organização das Nações Unidas para a Alimentação e Agricultura (FAO) e o Fundo Global para o Meio Ambiente (GEF) uniram esforços para aumentar a capacidade dos sectores agrícola e pastoral de Moçambique para lidar com as mudanças climáticas. O projeto gerou resultados relevantes, incluindo a incorporação de acções específicas de Adaptação às Mudanças Climáticas nos planos estratégicos a nível ministerial e nos Planos Económicos e Sociais e Orçamentos dos Distritos (PESOD); a elaboração da Contribuição Nacionalmente Determinada (NDC) de Moçambique; a criação de planos locais e comunitários de adaptação às mudanças climáticas; a instalação de 11 estações agro-meteorológicas e uma maior autonomia financeira para as mulheres beneficiárias. A avaliação recomendou que a FAO apoie o governo para garantir a integração da Adaptação às Mudanças Climáticas em documentos políticos chave e a integração das Escolas da Machamba do Camponês (EMC) em futuros programas de desenvolvimento rural, incluindo o novo Programa Sustenta, e que, em programas futuros, a FAO foque no desenvolvimento de cadeias de valor e na promoção de acesso dos agricultores aos mercados.

    The Harmonized World Soil Database version 2.0 (HWSD v2.0) is a unique global soil inventory providing information on the morphological, chemical and physical properties of soils at approximately 1 km resolution. Its main objective is to be useful for modelers and to serve as a basis for prospective studies on agroecological zoning, food security and the impacts of climate change. HWSD v2.0 also serves an educational function, illustrating the geographical distribution of soils as well as their properties globally. HWSD v2.0 is easily accessible and user-friendly.

    This document provides a global overview of beach seine fisheries and identifies key issues relevant for the responsible use of beach seines and the sustainable livelihoods of beach seine fishers. It also gives guidelines for fisheries managers and other stakeholders on how best to address the issues of management processes and measures, which have the mutually beneficial goals of restoring and conserving the health of fishery resources and their habitats and safeguarding the livelihoo ds of fishers and their communities. The document draws on the findings of case studies coordinated and funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries and Aquaculture Department in the Gambia, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Peru and Sri Lanka, and by the FAO/United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) Sustainable Fisheries Livelihoods Programme (SFLP) in Benin, Ghana and Togo. In addition to the findings of the case studies, other studies and publications on beach seines were reviewed and used for the preparation of this document.

    In recent years agricultural marketing has changed dramatically with a global boom in retail food marketing. Consumers are expressing greater concern for food quality and safety, and greater demand for high-value products. The future for many small farmers is bleak unless they can adapt their farming systems to these changes. Many of the constraints they face are related to lack of adequate know-how and skills. Market-oriented agricultural advisory services can play an important role in helping small farmers overcome these constraints and, in response, many countries in Asia are changing the content of their extension and advisory services. FAO has been at the vanguard of this shift and has developed a variety of training and extension materials in marketing and farm business management to better link small farmers to markets. This publication is a proceedings of a workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand from 11 to 13 May 2010 to raise awareness among heads of agricultural extension servic es of changes that are occurring and identify ways to meet these challenges by re-orienting agricultural extension services to respond to global and regional trends. The report contains summaries of the country papers as well as information on FAO training and extension materials available.
