Climate change and weather variations have an influence on the incidence of natural phenomena around the world, and pose a serious threat to crops, livestock and agricultural systems in general, putting countries' Food and Nutrition Security ( at risk Likewise, the livelihoods of rural societies are under threat, with a reduced ability to overcome poverty and achieve development The countries of the Latin America and Caribbean ( region are designing and implementing national programmes for agricultural and rural development, yet most of these programmes do not consider the threats and challenges arising from the effects of climate change and, therefore, do not include practices, actions and mechanisms that make them more resilient and better adapted to this phenomenon To ensure sustainable rural development, it is essential that national programmes for agricultural and rural development in the region include considerations of mitigation, adaptation and resilience with regard to the effects and new circumstances that arise due to climate change The project’s goal was to establish the necessary guidelines for the integration of resilience criteria into national programmes for agricultural and rural development in LAC, while developing the necessary technical and institutional capacities to do so.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023
Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum
    2023
This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.

Food loss analysis: causes and solutions – The Republic of Uganda. Beans, maize, and sunflower studies 2019

    No results found.

This report illustrates the food loss assessment studies undertaken along the maize, sunflower and beans supply chains in Uganda in 2015-16 and 2016-17. They aimed to identify the critical loss points in the selected supply chains, the key stages at which food losses occur, why they occur, the extent and impact of food losses and the economic, social and environmental implications of the food losses. Furthermore, these studies also evaluated the feasibility of potential interventions to reduce food losses and waste.

Latin America and the Caribbean - Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2023
    Statistics and trends
    2023
    Also available in:

The 2023 edition of the Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition in Latin America and the Caribbean presents an update of the data and trends in food security and nutrition in recent years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis and the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the economic slowdown, rising food inflation and income inequality have had an impact on regional figures. The most recent data shows that, between 2021 and 2022, progress was made in reducing hunger and food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the progress achieved is far from the targets established to meet SDG 2 of ending hunger. In addition, one in five people in the region cannot access a healthy diet and malnutrition in all its forms, including child stunting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity continue to be a major challenge.
