Synopsis (short abstract) Livestock production makes a significant contribution to rural development in Tonga, providing income for rural households and offering development potential through improved husbandry and stock breeds. The cattle and sheep industry in Tonga is undeveloped and characterized by low productivity as a result of limited access to quality pastures and feeds, uncontrolled and poor breeding, late weaning, poor husbandry, seasonal lack of feed and the stocking of species with low productive potential. Other constraints include the lack of trained and experienced staff and of specialized training in cattle and sheep production, and the lack of appropriate cattle and sheep management practices and of practical demonstrations for local producers. The aim of the projects was to provide technical assistance and support to the Livestock Division, of the MAFF, in collaboration with TNLDC, to improve the productivity of cattle and sheep farmers for household food security and nutritional status, and sustainable livelihoods.

    Improved and sustainable livestock production is a national priority for agricultural development in Azerbaijan, and animal breeding and feeding are necessary components of this. In this context, cattle is the most important component of the livestock sector in the country. A large number of households keeps cows, but there are very few professional farmers. The average dairy cattle breeding household has fewer than five cows, which are sustained under extensive systems and produce an average of 1 528 litresper cow per year and 150 kg of meat per adult cattle. The level of low productivity is mainly caused by poor quality of feed, absence of concentrates, and a lack of correct animal reproductive practices. In addition, pastures are not properly managed, the forage is of poor quality, while good quality silage is not produced due to insufficient knowledge and technology. Against this background, the main objective of the project was to improve cattle productivity by establishing appropriate breeding management and strengthening services for artificial insemination (AI) and feeding systems.

    The Sudan has a significant need and substantial potential to increase milk and beef production from Kenana and Butana cattle breeds. Kenana cattle are primarily raised for milk in villages, urban areas, and semi-nomadic settings, grazing naturally and relying on crop residues from rain-fed agricultural systems. Along with Butana cattle breed, Kenana cattle are among the top milk producers in the Sudan and serve as valuable sources of quality bulls and dams for genetic improvement in other states. However, the full potential of these promising dairy breeds has not yet been realized due to factors such as inadequate breeding technologies and poor feeding practices, even though effective strategies are achievable at a relatively low cost. Following independence, the Sudanese government established two livestock research stations in 1957 for the genetic conservation of Butana and Kenana cattle breeds. The Um Banien Livestock Production Research Station in Sinnar State was set up to improve the Kenana breed through selective breeding, produce elite Kenana bulls for distribution, and conduct research on forage production and animal feeding. However, the station was severely damaged and neglected in the early 1990s, resulting in a halt to its activities despite the significant local genetic resources available.
