No results found.Adopting climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices is a crucial measure that farmers can take to protect their livelihoods and production systems from the harmful effects of climate change; however, financial constraints often limit their ability to adopt these practices. Under a pilot project (FMM/GLO/148/MUL), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) implemented an approach that connected social protection measures with Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in the Mwanza and Neno districts of Malawi. The pilot approach divided FFS participants into three groups: one that received FFS training and a cash transfer, one that received FFS training and agricultural inputs, and one that only benefited from the FFS training. This project was subsequently formulated to measure the impact of these interventions on the adoption of CSA practices among the three groups through an Impact Evaluation (IE). -

No results found.Sustainable, inclusive, and resilient food systems are critical to achieving food security and nutrition, promoting adequate livelihoods for farmers, food producers, and their communities, and ensuring environmental sustainability. The imperative to address these intertwined objectives is underscored by the rising attention they have received, as evident in the deliberations of the UN Food Systems Summit. This study reflects on the role of social protection and economic inclusion programmes in food systems transformation. It discusses the country's food systems state and challenges, including poverty, food security, agricultural productivity, and natural resource management. The paper also provides key recommendations on how to accelerate food systems transformation: 1-Developing coherent policies and programmes to maximise synergies between interventions that involve different sectors. 2-Designing and implementing social protection and economic inclusion programmes tailored to rural populations 3- Incorporating a food systems perspective into social protection strategies is vital to proactively address potential trade-offs or unforeseen impacts across social, economic, and environmental dimensions.

The second part reviews five common social protection instruments from a gender perspective by taking into consideration two principles and eleven key e lements required for the full realization of rural women’s economic empowerment. The third part reflects on an integrated social protection system that includes gender equality and women’s empowerment objectives in order to foster poverty reduction more effectively and sustainably. It also presents key features that can make these interventions more gender-sensitive. The fourth part reflects on the linkages between women’s economic empowerment and social protection. -

This technical guide reviews, from a theoretical and practical perspective, the critical issues that must be addressed for fresh-cut produce to meet consumer demand for convenience, quality and safety. A case study on fresh-cut processing in Thailand is included.
