Synopsis (short abstract) By invitation of the Ministry of Agriculture of China, FAO has conducted a rapid appraisal of the quality management systems for fruits, vegetables and pork meat in China and Hong Kong. This working document presents the findings of the mission. It gives a rapid appraisal of the different quality management systems elaborated by both public and private sectors to manage the food quality standards investigated during the mission. It presents the results of a SWOT analysis by different stakehol ders of the supply chains investigated by the appraisal mission. The document also reports the findings of a national workshop of Chinese experts convened by the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO to clarify the structure of the food quality management system in China and to propose actions to be initiated in order to face the threats confronted by the food quality management system, as identified by the SWOT analysis.

    Safety and quality of water used with fresh fruits and vegetables 2021

    During fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV) production, water is used for a variety of purposes. Even the water was conventionally treated and disinfected, it may still potentially contain human pathogens, albeit at low concentrations. A risk assessment, appropriate to the national or local production context, should be conducted to assess the potential risks associated with a specific water source or supply in order to devise the appropriate risk mitigation strategies. Since the 48th session of Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) noted the importance of water safety and quality in food production and processing, FAO and WHO has undertaken the work on this subject. This report describes the output of the third in a series of meetings, which examined appropriate and fit-for-purpose microbiological criteria for water used with fresh fruit and vegetables. The advice herein will support decision making when applying the concept of fit-for-purpose water for use in the pre- and post-harvest production of fresh fruit and vegetables.

    One of the main objectives of the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) negotiated under the Uruguay Round is to improve the access of developing countries to foreign markets. Constraints in the domestic supply chains of many countries, along with weak marketing support and trade facilitation services, have prevented them, however, from exploiting the opportunities provided by the AoA and by other agreements to improve market access. The aim of this guide is to inform policy analysts on issues that sho uld be considered while developing policies and measures to break the main processing and marketing constraints that prevent their countries from fully exploiting their agrifood export potential.
