Synopsis (short abstract) This information document is a summary of the procedures for application and designation of a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) site. The proposal – describing the system can be prepared through several ways such as formal gathering of data and information, informal or through secondary gathering of information. Formal gathering of data and information would require conduct of multi-stakeholders consultation to get direct information from the stakeholders while the other m eans would only require simple desk study assessments, or it is also possible to combine both ways to produce a proposal. However, preparation of a GIAHS proposal which uses the formal data gathering, it is to be noted that this process is only a preliminary part of the application process. Therefore, institutions/organizations wishes to submit an application are requested to pay attention not to create any misunderstanding about the concept of GIAHS as well as to avoid unnecessary funding expec tations from the stakeholders particularly at the local level.

The site 1 is located in downtown Mexico, connected through both main roads limiting it (the Tláhuac-Chalco Avenue to the North and the Mexico-Tulyehualco highway to the South), which link to the Anillo Periférico, a main road which connects all of the Mexico City’s metropolitan zone. Located to 18 kms. from the Mexico City’s center, it can be reached by car (about 45 minutes) or from every place by the most used urban mains of transportation, which are varied and frequent to access the site; su ch as several bus lines of local and foreign destinations, a line of electric tram connected to the Public Transport System (Metro) and city taxis, which ensure the connection to the capital city.

The Takachihogo-Shiibayama Site (hereinafter referred to as "the Site") is a steep mountainous site enclosed by the peaks of the Kyushu-Sanchi, ranging from 1,000 to 1,700 meters in elevation. Mentioned in ancient Japanese chronicles such as the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, myths and traditions are cherished even today. In this tough, forest-enclosed environment where flat land is extremely sparse, the people have established a distinctive and sustainable composite system of agriculture and forestry in the mountainous Site through a combination of labor and ingenuity.
