Synopsis (short abstract) This brief summarizes the objectives, key deliverables, outputs, results and expected impact of the project "Fostering productive investments to create decent farm and non-farm jobs for rural youth in migration-prone areas of Senegal” (FMM/HLO/115/MUL). The project aims to foster productive investments of migrants' remittances and diaspora funds and hence create decent farm and non-farm jobs, particularly for youth, in order to address the root causes of rural distress migration and harness the development potential of migrants for the rural economy.

    Promoting decent rural employment 2017

    Promoting policies and investments that support the creation of decent employment opportunities in rural areas is crucial to generating livelihoods for the world’s poor. Rural people depend on agriculture and their own labour to earn a living; yet, rural employment opportunities are often scarce, informal, hazardous and poorly remunerated. To meet the Sustainable Development Goals and eradicate poverty and hunger by 2030, FAO works to build lasting policy changes that foster rural employment. B y supporting the development of strategies and programmes that create more and better jobs, FAO helps governments stimulate both the agricultural and the rural, non-farm economies. This includes promoting the application of international labour standards, particularly for eliminating child labour in agriculture, and partnering with national stakeholders to build human capital by improving access to vocational and entrepreneurial training and strengthening the capacity of rural organizations. FA O also helps countries address the root causes of distress migration by boosting decent employment opportunities in rural areas, while building resilience and risk management mechanisms to protect rural livelihoods.

    Characteristics, patterns and drivers of rural migration in Senegal 2020

    Although migratory flows from rural areas are a common phenomenon in most developing countries, we possess little information on their dynamics and determinants. In this context, in September 2017, in the framework of the project “Fostering productive investments to create decent farm and non-farm jobs for rural youth in migration-prone areas in Senegal”, FAO and the Senegalese National Agency of Statistics and Demography (ANSD) conducted a household survey with the aim of generating information on migration phenomena in rural areas. The survey results described in this study contribute to broadening the available knowledge base on the causes and dynamics of rural migration and aim to inform sectoral economic policies, youth employment and rural development policies.
