    Bivalve production in the targeted areas increased overall (although the exact percentage increase had yet to be measured at the time of reporting), and 150 000 scallop seeds measuring between four and five mm were produced through the acquisition of improved technical skills The project design included three outputs Under the first output, improved bivalve culture systems were implemented in two targeted aquaculture cooperative demonstration farms, covering a coastal zone of 30 ha Output two was partially achieved Its primary focus was to introduce advanced post harvest management practices and value addition methods on the two targeted farms however, due to the COVID 19 related travel restrictions, field visits and consultations with international experts could not take place as originally planned That said, the international consultants produced three technical manuals (one on Pacific oyster farming, one on mussel farming and one on scallop hatchery seed production) that were provided to technical staff of the Ministry of Fisheries MoFi The MoFi then transmitted the procedures and protocols contained in the manuals to the Hongwon Mariculture Cooperative and Songdo Fisheries and Mariculture Cooperative The final output, which envisaged the training of 175 farmers and 25 fishery/aquaculture development planners on bivalve production, the operation and maintenance of culture units, harvest and post harvest management and value addition, was only partially achieved as well, owing to the travel restrictions The manuals are expected to serve as the basis for further training in these areas.

    More than two billion people worldwide suffer from hidden hunger due to diets that lack sufficient nutrients despite having the required quantity of food energy. Crops are the main source of minerals and vitamins for both humans and animals, however nutrient-poor staple crops from nutrient-poor soils can result in inadequate nutrient intake and unhealthy development. The Global Soil Partnership (GSP), through the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management (VGSSM), published by FAO in 2017, aims to address these issues by promoting the role of soils in food security and nutrition and implementing sustainable soil management practices that avoid nutrient mining and soil degradation. In this context, the present project aimed to analysethe knowledge gaps and regulatory and institutional context related to soil fertility and sustainable soil management. Its objective was to promote the application of sustainable soil management (SSM) for nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) in order to enhance the nutritional quality of locally produced food and reduce the impact of hidden hunger.

    La presencia de niveles elevados de hambre, malnutrición y pobreza en medio de una riqueza mundial y una abundancia de alimentos cada vez mayores, así como la incapacidad de proteger a las personas vulnerables de los efectos de las crisis, apuntan a la imperiosa necesidad de reformar la gobernanza mundial de la seguridad alimentaria. El Comité de Seguridad Alimentaria Mundial fue establecido en 1974 como órgano intergubernamental destinado a proporcionar un foro para el examen y seguimiento de las políticas relacionadas con la seguridad alimentaria mundial, en particular la producción de alimentos y el acceso físico y económico a los mismos. A raíz del documento sobre la reforma del Comité, aprobado por la Conferencia de la FAO en 2009, se formuló este proyecto de fondo fiduciario de múltiples donantes con objeto de ayudar a cubrir los costos de estas actividades adicionales y contribuir a la financiación extrapresupuestaria para permitir al Comité realizar sus nuevas funciones y cumplir sus nuevas aspiraciones.

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.
