Managing Soil Sustainably for Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia - GCP/GLO/730/GER 2019

Micronutrients from soil are crucial for plant growth and development. They also affect the nutritional content of produce. Owing to nutrient imbalances caused by unsustainable management, soils in some parts of the world are providing fewer nutrients to plants, and therefore, to animals and people. In an effort to combat the deterioration of soils and the resulting decrease in nutrients in food, this project supports sustainable soil management (SSM) in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso and Malawi, three countries whose populations suffer from malnutrition. These SSM practices are a key element of nutrition-sensitive agriculture, which is a food-based approach to agricultural development that puts nutritionally dense foods, dietary diversity and food fortification at the center of overcoming malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.

By recognizing the threats posed by soil degradation to the overall environment, and their socio-economic and political implications at national and international levels, the project aimed to promote the sustainable use of soil resources at all levels through the implementation of Plans of Action and Regional Implementations Plans produced under the Global Soil Partnership, as well as through advocacy on soils as part of the Post-2015 and International Year of Soils 2015 development agendas. The key objectives were to promote sustainable soil management and improve soil governance to guarantee healthy and productive soils, and to support the provision of essential ecosystem services towards food security and improved nutrition, climate change adaptation and mitigation and sustainable development.

Soils are central to the creation of a host of goods and services integral to ecosystems and human well-being. Soils are critical for achieving food security and nutrition, as 95 percent of our food is produced in soils. Soils also contribute to adaptation to climate change and building resilience of smallholders. With the new Sustainable Development Goals, countries are committing to ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture by 2030. The Global Soil Partnership constitutes an agenda for action to promote sustainable soil management. Its Regional Soil Partnerships (composed of national focal points) have developed regional implementation plans based on national priorities to support sustainable soil management and enhance the provision of key ecosystem services. This project built on a successful cooperation with Switzerland, who supported the International Year of Soils as part of the Healthy Soils Facility, and focused on supporting the implementation of a number of activities for strengthening soil governance at different levels.
