    Open Access can be defined as the immediate, irrevocable and free online access to information products by any user worldwide, and re-use that is free of most restrictions, subject to proper attribution. FAO considers Open Access to be an important practical application of its commitment to the collection, synthesis, packaging and distribution of FAO knowledge to the world at large, and particularly the populations of those countries where such knowledge may not be readily accessible. This policy advocates the application of suitable open licenses to FAO copyright material in accordance with the principles of openness and sharing envisioned under Open Access, and consistent with the mandate of FAO.Last updated February 2025

    Despite almost a century of research and extension efforts, soil erosion by water, wind and tillage continues to be the greatest threat to soil health and soil ecosystem services in many regions of the world.     As renewed international efforts are needed to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the livestock sector can contribute its part. An important emitter of greenhouse gas, it also has the potential to significantly reduce its emissions. This report provides a unique global assessment of the magnitude, the sources and pathways of emissions from different livestock production systems and supply chains. Relying on life cycle assessment, statistical analysis and scenario building, it also prov ides estimates of the sector’s mitigation potential and identifies concrete options to reduce emissions. The report is a useful resource for stakeholders from livestock producers to policy-makers, researchers and civil society representatives, which also intends to inform the public debate on the role of livestock supply chains in climate change and possible solutions.
