Synopsis (short abstract) Rapid population growth in Kenya has led to increased demand and competition for land and the goods and services associated with it. With research showing that effective control of land has great influence on people’s capacity to construct livelihoods, overcome poverty and malnutrition and improve food and nutrition security, the project was implemented to support the Government of Kenya in its efforts to provide more equitable access to land resources for communities in two pilot areas of the c ountry, Tana River and Turkana counties. This was to be achieved using existing national and global guidelines designed to contribute to eradicating hunger and poverty.

This brochure is produced on the occasion of the 5th Capitalization Meeting held in Addis Ababa from 30 May - 01 June 2017. The Project involves supporting 14 countries in Africa to implement EU Funded projects implementing the VGGT. Transversal Support provides a platform for project implementers and partners to increase project compliance with international standards and to benefit from technical guidance, capacity development and possibilities for exchange among practitioners.

Secure tenure and effective land governance are strongly related to social, economic and ecological development. The eradication of hunger, malnutrition and poverty, enhanced economic and social development, and the sustainable use of natural resources depend primarily on how people, communities and other players gain access to land, fisheries and forest resources. The Government of Kenya appreciates the centrality of land to the attainment of all three pillars of its Vision 2030. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 also provides a legal basis for the recognition and protection of land rights and secure equitable access to land, and eliminates gender discrimination in the use, ownership and management of land. However, the protection of land related rights remains elusive in arid and semi arid land, which constitutes over 80 percent of the land area in the country. Recognizing land as a structural factor to address food security, poverty reduction and agricultural development, the European Union, in partnership with FAO , commissioned a Land Governance Programme in Kenya in September 2016.
