Synopsis (short abstract) Soil, water and nutrients are vital for life and food security. Isotopic technologies play a crucial role in assessing the impacts of changing weather patterns on soil and agricultural water resources. The Joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/ International Atomic Energy Agency (FAO/IAEA) Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture assists member countries to use nuclear and isotopic techniques to effectively measure real-time changes in soil and water quantit y and nutrient movement, thereby improving farming practices that keeps the soil healthy, save water and nutrients and optimize crop yields.

    Of the essential material needs of humankind, the basic requirement is for an adequate supply of air, water and food. People have free access to the air they breathe. However, access to drinking-water and food, while easily obtained for some, is difficult for many. In addition to being physically available, these materials should also be of acceptable quality and continuously so. Hunger and diseases have affected humankind since the dawn of history. Throughout time, there have been p eriods of famine leading to suffering and starvation, making the fight against hunger and the diseases caused by malnutrition a permanent challenge. For many centuries until about 1800, the average grain yield was about 800 kg/ha, providing food only for a few people. The main problems were the low fertility of most soils (mainly caused by the depletion of nutrients) and the great yield losses from crop diseases and pests.

    Farmers’ Rights under the International Treaty is the fifth in a series of educational modules being developed under the coordination of the Secretariat of the International Treaty to strengthen capacities for the effective implementation of the International Treaty among its stakeholder groups. The work on these training materials was officially welcomed by the Governing Body of the International Treaty at its fourth session. The educational modules are aimed at all stakeholder groups of the International Treaty, including policy makers and their staff, civil servants, gene bank staff, plant breeders, farmers’ organizations and other civil society organizations. They are also designed as information and awareness raising materials for the use of media, academia, prospective donors and other interested institutions.
