Synopsis (short abstract) Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to mitigate the adverse impacts of cyclone Remal on the livelihoods and food security of the most vulnerable farming households in the affected districts. With Belgium’s generous support, FAO, through cash+ interventions, will provide 5 050 farming households (20 200 people) with time‑critical production inputs (e.g. rice and vegetable seeds, fertilizers and agricultural tools) along with cash transfers to enable them to meet their immediate needs. This document provides a brief description of the context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in supporting the recovery of the affected communities.

    Through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to mitigate the adverse impacts of two waves of devastating flash floods (May–June 2022) on the livelihoods and food security of vulnerable farming and fishing households. With Belgium’s generous support, FAO will provide 11 200 flood-affected farming and fishing households (56 000 people) with time-critical production inputs. The planned emergency assistance packages will enable the affected communities to restore their livelihoods, and increase crop and aquaculture production. The Central Emergency Response Fund will complement this project by funding interventions to support the livestock sector. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of flood-affected communities.

    For more than two decades, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s northeastern Ituri province has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis marked by violent attacks perpetrated by non-state armed groups, triggering massive population displacements. In addition, many communities are affected by natural hazards, such as floods, landslides and drought, exacerbating their vulnerabilities and leading to increased levels of food insecurity. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis (October 2024), over 1.5 million people in Ituri are acutely food insecure (IPC Phase 3 or above). Alarmingly, 61 percent of those in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) are internally displaced people, who previously relied on agriculture for household consumption and income. About 82 percent of displaced people reside with host families, putting additional pressure on them given already limited resources.The Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to provide vulnerable households with timely, lifesaving food production and livelihoods assistance in Ituri. This will help them meet their most immediate needs while creating the conditions to strengthen their resilience.

    The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is facing a socioeconomic crisis that continues to drive food insecurity, leaving 4.4 million people in rural and disaster-prone areas in need of food assistance. The state of Zulia is among the hardest hit by this complex humanitarian emergency, and the current La Niña cycle could make the situation worse. To mitigate these effects, the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium contributed USD 500 000 to FAO to implement anticipatory actions that will benefit 1 667 households (7 786 people).
