The promotion of communication material for the WSD campaign can support achieving different FAO strategic objectives, in particular advocacy for making agriculture more productive and sustainable (SO2) and sharing information on increasing resilience of livelihoods from disasters (SO3).

En la UNEA3, celebrada en Nairobi en diciembre de 2017, los países coincidieron en la urgencia de abordar el problema causado por la contaminación del suelo y se adoptó la resolución ministerial "Gestión de la contaminación del suelo para lograr el desarrollo sostenible" para abordar la contaminación del suelo a nivel mundial. La principal petición de la resolución es emprender las medidas necesarias a nivel nacional y regional para conocer el alcance de la contaminación del suelo en sus territorios. La resolución solicita que se evalúen el alcance y las tendencias futuras de la contaminación del suelo, los riesgos y las repercusiones de la contaminación del suelo en la salud, el medio ambiente y la seguridad alimentaria, incluida la degradación de la tierra y la carga de morbilidad resultante de la exposición a suelos contaminados. Además, pide que se tomen medidas urgentes y que los países y los organismos de apoyo cooperen para hacer frente a este problema. El Simposio Mundial sobre la Contaminación del Suelo (GSOP18), coorganizado por la FAO, la Alianza Mundial por el Suelo (AMS) y el Grupo Técnico Intergubernamental de Suelos (ITPS), el PNUMA, la OMS y las Convenciones BRS, fue la primera contribución para implementar esta resolución. La AMS, con el apoyo de su ITPS y de las asociaciones regionales, propone llevar a cabo un estudio detallado de la situación en todo el mundo mediante la recopilación de información básica relacionada con la contaminación del suelo, como las políticas para prevenir, controlar y remediar la contaminación del suelo, el número y la extensión de los lugares contaminados siguiendo un proceso impulsado por los países en combinación con las herramientas científicas más avanzadas. Este documento constituye el resumen para legisladores de las principales conclusiones y recomendaciones del informe sobre la Evaluación Mundial de la Contaminación del Suelo.

Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms. -

This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

Su objetivo es sentar las bases para un nuevo debate durante el próximo Simposio Mundial sobre la Contaminación del Suelo (GSOP18), que se celebrará en la sede de la FAO del 2 al 4 de mayo de 2018. La publicación ha sido revisada por el Grupo Técnico Intergubernamental sobre el Suelo (GTIS) y por autores colaboradores. Aborda las evidencias científicas sobre la contaminación del suelo y destaca la necesidad de evaluar el alcance de la contaminación del suelo a nivel mundial a fin de lograr la seguridad alimentaria y el desarrollo sostenible. Esto está relacionado con los objetivos estratégicos de la FAO, especialmente el SO1, el SO2, el SO4 y el SO5, debido al papel crucial que desempeñan los suelos para garantizar un ciclo eficaz de nutrientes que permita producir alimentos nutritivos e inocuos, reducir las concentraciones de CO2 y N2O en la atmósfera y, por lo tanto, mitigar el cambio climático, desarrollar prácticas sostenibles de gestión del suelo que aumenten la resiliencia de la agricultura a los fenómenos climáticos extremos mediante la reducción de los procesos de degradación del suelo.
