ProjectFactsheetEnhancing Data Quality and Assessments for Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) Working Groups - GCP/RAF/517/EC 2023
Also available in:
No results found. The role of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) is to promote the sustainable use of the living marine resources within its area of competence, through the appropriate management and development of fisheries and fishing operations. The CECAF Working Groups faced various challenges, including the quality of information and data available for applying the standard assessment models, as well as the human and financial capacity to conduct the analyses. The capacity for stock assessment in the region was generally weak, and there was a need to strengthen members’ capacity in this area, including the ability to critically review the quality of the underlying data, but also to provide a better scientific understanding to support the advice process. Against this background, the overall objective of this European Union-funded project was to strengthen the capacity of CECAF Working Group member countries to provide data, conduct assessment analyses, and provide management advice to the CECAF’s Scientific Sub-Committee. -

Doctors Global Programme – A farmer-to-farmer training programme
2020Also available in:
The Soil Doctors programme is developed under the umbrella of the Global Soil Partnership and promotes the establishment of a farmer-to-farmer training system. The Soil Doctors Global Programme aims to build the capacity of smallholder farmers on the practice of sustainable soil management and, by doing so, support governmental agencies and organizations working on agricultural extension at the field level (promoting broader impact and a reduction of costs). Trainings will also rely on the establishment of demonstration farms and experimental fields by the Soil Doctors, which might attract the interest of research institutes and universities involved in the programme. The programme also aims to educate farmers on soil science principles for practices of sustainable soil management and aims to achieve this by providing them with a set of tools composed of some educational materials and a soil testing methods (STM) manual for preliminary soil analysis. The STM is a collection of locally relevant, and easy to use, soil analyses procedures that would be selected by each area where the program is implemented. -
Book (stand-alone)FlagshipThe State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - in brief 2019In 2007, the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Commission) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) included the preparation of the report on The State of the World’s Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Report) into its Multi-Year Programme of Work. The Commission later determined that the scope of the Report be “farmed aquatic species and their wild relatives within national jurisdiction”. Following a country-driven process, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department prepared a draft Report for review by the Commission, its Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Aquatic Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and FAO’s Committee on Fisheries (COFI). COFI also consulted its Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and its Advisory Working Group on Aquatic Genetic Resources and Technologies.
