    Food prices in local markets showed an upward trend, adversely affecting food access. Nominal millet price has reached the highest level observed in 2008. The number of food insecure people is estimated at 2.6 million. The effects of the 2009/10 food crisis are still affecting food security conditions of poor households and the situation could worsen if prices remain high. The crisis situation in neighbouring countries is causing widespread displacement of people that are crossing into Niger . The Government is rebuilding national food reserves while implementing safety net programmes to assist poor consumers.

    In April, food prices stabilized after significant increases in recent months. High prices remain a major problem for the poor. Nominal rice price may soon approach the level observed in 2008. People affected by the flood last year are still recovering and continue to require emergency assistance. Different agencies are still concerned over their food security conditions. Recent conflict between government forces and insurgents has displaced thousands of people in the north western dis tricts of Pakistan. The Government aimed at resuming wheat exports by lifting the wheat export ban.

    In most markets, monthly maize prices have decreased in the reference period due to the beginning of harvests; however prices remain at high levels. Nominal maize price has reached or exceeded the highest levels observed in 2008. Overall, the national food security situation is satisfactory thanks to newly harvested maize crops available on markets; however different agencies report an alarming situation of hunger and undernourishment. Flooding caused by heavy rains in the first months of the year has led to deterioration of food security conditions in localized areas of central and south eastern provinces. The government is supporting the agricultural sector by providing inputs, seeds and tools to farmers.
