Synopsis (short abstract) Sorghum and millets in human nutrition is a new addition to the FAO Food and Nutrition Series. The publication is broad in scope and coverage, starting with the history and nature of sorghum and millets and dealing with production, utilization and consumption. It provides extensive information on the nutritional value, chemical composition, storage and processing of these foods. In addition, the anti-nutritional factors present in these foods and ways of reducing their health hazards are discuss ed. The authors have described formulations of various popular foods prepared from sorghum and millets and their nutritional composition and quality, and they have compiled many recipes for the preparation of foods from regions where sorghum and millets are important dietary staples. An extensive bibliography is included as well.

    This document contains the report of the situational analysis of post-harvest systems in the Volta Basin riparian countries, and presents proposals for interventions aimed to strengthen their efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability. This report summarizes the main activities implemented under the NEPAD–FAO Fish Programme (Support to the Implementation of the Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa-NFFP), focusing particularly on how its Output B4 “Mechanisms established for impro ving the performance of the fisheries and aquaculture post-harvest chain and regional trade” has been achieved. This first phase of the programme was carried out in the Volta Basin, which served as a pilot beneficiary area, to inform similar interventions in other shared waterbodies.

    Smallholders and traders are key stakeholders in fruit and vegetable supply chains supplying local mass markets across South Asian countries. Training these stakeholders and introducing simple technical innovations into these supply chains can dramatically improve the quality and shelf-life of fresh produce and reduce losses, thereby generating economic benefits for producers, supply chain stakeholders and consumers as well as improving nutrition. Consequently, greater support is called for to a ddress the challenges faced in traditional supply chains. This policy brief aims to provide information on applying the principles of post-harvest management of fruit and vegetable supply chains for quality and safety assurance handling practice along with simple technologies were piloted with stakeholders in traditional fruits and vegetables in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Countries.
