Synopsis (short abstract) A Regional Workshop on the Promotion of the FAO Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA) in Latin America and the Caribbean will be held from 23 to 24 June 2025 in Panama City, Panama, ahead of the XIX meeting of the Commission on Small-Scale, Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture for Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPESAALC), to discuss and develop strategies to effectively implement the GSA in the region. Expect outputs are: A better understanding of the GSA and their relevance within the regional context; Priorities and challenges of aquaculture in the LAC region; A communication approach for the LAC region; List of LAC networks and stakeholders relevant for the implementation of the GSA; Recommendations for COPPESAALC, FAO andits Members to disseminate and implement the GSA; and FAO workshop report.

As requested by Members, FAO is engaged in mainstreaming the Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA) into global, regional and national policies and strategic frameworks in close collaboration with both Members and key stakeholders.A key component of this initiative is the organization of Regional Promotion Workshops, which aim to increase the awareness of the GSA by encouraging engagement of national authorities to action on a plan for GSA implementation, sharing stories and experiences of good aquaculture practices, welcoming all value chain stakeholders in responsible and sustainable aquaculture sector development, and contributing to food, nutrition, livelihood and social development.

Historically, FAO has engaged in various collaborative efforts with Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent at the global level, which have been strengthened through mutual understanding and respect. These groups are key actors in the fight against poverty and hunger, and the Organization recognizes their valuable contributions to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In Latin America and the Caribbean, nearly half of the rural population is comprised of Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent. They face major challenges and there have been serious violations of their collective and individual rights, while their ancestral knowledge and practices are crucial for the sustainable development of the region. These issues have led to the formulation of the "FAO regional strategy for collaboration with Indigenous Peoples and People of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean" the result of a long process of exchanges and consultation with their leaders and organizations at the local, national and regional levels, carried out almost entirely against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic since the beginning of 2020. The regional strategy is a useful tool to guide the collaborative actions in the region between FAO, the governments and Indigenous Peoples and people of African descent, with the aim of achieving more inclusive, efficient, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems.

This document provides a summary of the presentations, discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the Work Planning Workshop on Sustainable Management of Bycatch in Latin America and Caribbean Trawl Fisheries (REBYC-II LAC) held in Bridgetown, Barbados on 9-12 September 2015. The main objectives of the Work Planning workshop of the Sustainable Management of Bycatch in Latin America and Caribbean Trawl Fisheries (REBYC-II LAC) project (http://www.fao.org/in-action/rebyc-2/en/) were to (i) r evise and specify the 2015-2016 national and regional workplans; (ii) review and agree on the financial, administrative, and managerial aspects of the project and (iii) define the next steps in the activities. Achievements of the workshop included: (i) the review and establishment of the administrative and management arrangements of the project; (ii) the review and adjustments to country workplans and budgets for 2015-2016, including formalization of national activities; and (iii) agreement on t he next steps for project implementation.
