This report presents the results of the value chain analysis of the mangrove oyster value chain in the Gambia conducted from 2021-2022 by the value chain development programme FISH4ACP. This report contains a functional analysis of the value chain, assesses its sustainability and resilience, develops an upgrading strategy and an implementation plan to which FISH4ACP will contribute. FISH4ACP is an initiative of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) aimed at making fisheries and aquaculture value chains in twelve OACPS member countries more sustainable. It contributes to food and nutrition security, economic prosperity and job creation by ensuring the economic, social and environmental sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. FISH4ACP is implemented by FAO with funding from the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The market study report builds on the potentials identified in the value chain analysis and design report for new oyster products and the by-products (e.g., shells) for market development. The study aims to: a) understand the oyster market, the players (including governance) and how they operate, b) assess the growth potential of the oyster market and market for by-products, and c) identify market opportunities (e.g. niche markets for new oyster products and by-products) and critical success factors of the oyster market to inform the strategy.

Behind the new-look Non-Wood News is the usual wealth of information from the world of NWFPs. The Special Features section covers two different aspects of NWFPs: a specific product (bamboo) and a developing market (cosmetics and beauty care). Bamboo is versatile: it can be transformed, for example, into textiles, charcoal, vinegar, green plastic or paper and can also be used as a food source, a deodorant, an innovative building material and to fuel power stations. Reports indicate that natural c osmetics and beauty care are a huge global market, with forecasts indicating an annual growth of 9 percent through 2008. The Special Feature on Forest cosmetics: NWFP use in the beauty industry builds on this and includes information industry interest and marketing strategies (consumers are being drawn to natural products and thus their content is emphasized). As can be seen from the articles on shea butter in Africa and thanakha in Myanmar, many societies have always used and benefited from nat ural cosmetics. This issue includes other examples of traditional knowledge, such as the uses of the secretions of a poisonous tree frog in Brazil and the use by the traditional healers in India of allelopathic knowledge.

The eleventh Session of the Coordinating Working Party on Atlantic Fishery Statistics (CWP), conscious of the fact that source and reference documents related to the concepts and definitions used in fishery statistics are widely dispersed and not always readily available, proposed in 1982 that a “Handbook of Fishery Statistics” should be brought together. The content of the present publication, renamed “CWP Handbook of Fishery Statistical Standards”, is largely based on the 1990 edition but in a ddition to extensive revisions concerning CWP memberships, and relevant modifications to commissions’ statistical work, has been expanded to cover descriptions of the existing major fishing areas in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Antarctic Oceans, and presents also eight new Sections on fishery related subjects. The CWP Handbook now covers all the intended range of fishery statistical concepts, definitions and classifications.
