Synopsis (short abstract) In 2007, the African Union (AU) launched the implementation of the Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative, which aims to tackle deforestation, desertification, biodiversity loss, climate change, food insecurity and poverty in Africa’s drylands through the establishment of productive green landscapes, ultimately increasing the prosperity and resilience of the millions of people living in targeted areas. The Boosting Restoration, Income, Development, Generating Ecosystem Services (BRIDGES) Project was designed within the framework of the GGW programme and aimed to strengthen the work being done on large-scale land restoration in Eritrea, Mauritania, and the Sudan, three countries with a high level of desertification and land degradation.The project was centred around the achievement of three main results that were based on its Outputs: (i) the creation of an enabling environment and the building of capacities; (ii) the restoration of degraded lands and the implementation of sustainable land management practices; and (iii) effective knowledge management, communications and visibility.

    The United Nations (UN) Decade of Ecosystem Restoration aims to foster a global movement to stop, prevent and reverse the degradation of ecosystems. The Decade offers an unparalleled opportunity for ongoing restoration efforts to be scaled up and for the creation of an enabling environment for further restoration action. To guide the implementation of the Decade, a Consortium was formed between the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), who is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)/International Climate Initiative (IKI), and three participating partners, including FAO, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Consortium developed a 2021 2030 strategy and implementation plan for the Decade, which consists of three goals and nine activities.

    En 2007, l’Union africaine a lancé l’exécution de l’initiative Grande muraille verte du Sahara et du Sahel, destinée à s’attaquer à la déforestation, la désertification, la perte de biodiversité, le changement climatique, l’insécurité alimentaire et la pauvreté dans les zones arides africaines par la création d’espaces verts productifs, appelés à accroître la prospérité et la résilience de millions de personnes habitant les zones visées. Le projet BoostingRestoration, Income, Development, GeneratingEcosystemServices (BRIDGES, «Stimuler la restauration des terres, la croissance des revenus, le développement, et engendrer des services écosystémiques», conçu dans le cadre du programme Grande muraille verte, visait à renforcer les travaux de restauration des terres effectués à grande échelle en Érythrée, Mauritanie et au Soudan, trois pays connaissant un taux élevé de désertification et de dégradation des terres.Le projet était centré sur la réalisation des trois principaux résultats découlant de ses produits: i) la création d’un environnement favorable et le développement des capacités; ii) la restauration des terres dégradées et la mise en oeuvre de pratiques de gestion durable des terres; iii) la gestion effective des savoirs, la communication et la visibilité.

    Upscaling Forest and Landscape Restoration to Achieve Nationally Determined Contributions Under the Paris Agreement - GCP/INT/296/GER 2025

    As recognized in the Paris Agreement, forest-based options are key to achieving countries’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) through joint mitigation and adaptation approaches (REDD+) providing both carbon and non-carbon-benefits. The effective implementation of the Bonn Challenge, through several existing Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) regional initiatives, represents an opportunity to scale up restoration impacts, thus contributing to achieving NDCs. In this context, this project worked across three regions with diverse landscapes and high potential for increasing both forest carbon stocks and the provision of non-carbon benefits through large scale FLR programmes. It sought to enhance national and regional capacities and the political will to successfully plan, implement and monitor large-scale programmes mainstreaming FLR as a key option to achieve countries’ NDCs in the context of the Paris Agreement.

    Este documento resume el proyecto de la FAO TCP RLA 3804 en América Latina, que buscaba identificar la vinculación entre las políticas gubernamentales, la protección social y las acciones anticipatorias en el territorio. Los estudios realizados en Colombia, Nicaragua y República Dominicana identificaron oportunidades y brechas en esta vinculación, especialmente para comunidades rurales vulnerables, considerando aspectos de género y las necesidades de grupos indígenas y afrodescendientes. El proyecto aportó valiosas lecciones al campo de la gestión del riesgo de desastres.
