MeetingMeeting documentGlobal Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels
The way forward (in the fight against IUU)
2014The Global Record is one of the latest international initiatives initially requested by Ministers and then taken on by the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) as a necessary, urgent, cost-efficient and effective global tool (programme) to fight IUU fishing. Its aim is to increase transparency and traceability of vessels and their activities as well as fish products ´from the net to the plate´, through information exchange and dissemination of that information in a simple and neutral manner. It pre sents strong synergies with other global tools to fight IUU fishing like the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) and the Voluntary Guidelines for Flag State Performance (VG-FSP) as well as with market-related measures, thus making it more difficult for illegal perpetrators to go undetected. In implementing such a programme, a flexible, phased and collaborative approach is essential for it to succeed in its endeavours. Through planning the first steps and analysing the possibilities ahead, FAO p roposes a way forward to advance this initiative in a timely, responsive and cost-effective manner, whilst paying due attention to the special needs of developing countries to ensure widespread participation and generate a real impact in the fight against IUU fishing. This is particularly necessary in the current global situation of scarcity of resources to support long-term programmes at the global level, where cost-effectiveness and collaboration have to be at the forefront of any such underta king. The Global Record programme is an integration of three components: system development, capacity development and awareness raising. The strategy detailed in this document encompasses them all, but gives priority to the design, development and implementation of the system in order to make the Global Record operational in the shortest timeframe possible. In this regard, a five year financial proposal is put forward in Appendix 4. Several major conclusions are drawn up, including the use of th e IMO number as the UVI for Phase 1, the need for guidance and commitment of Member States to collaborate. The strategy proposed in this document on the way forward is open for guidance from COFI 31. -

Book (series)FlagshipThe State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2021
Transforming food systems for food security, improved nutrition and affordable healthy diets for all
2021In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation. To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world. In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms. -
Book (stand-alone)Technical bookHS Codes for fisheries and aquaculture products
Harmonized System. Nomenclature 2022
2023Also available in:
No results found. This publication, developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the active support of the World Customs Organization (WCO), builds on the Harmonized System: Nomenclature 2022 edition. It presents all possible classifications for fisheries and aquaculture products by species, with a full description of each HS code, to facilitate its use within the fisheries sector, including aquaculture. This publication does not modify the structure of the HS or modify species grouping, as it is an auxiliary tool to facilitate classification and enhance understanding of the HS system from the angle of fisheries and aquaculture products. This publication is divided into three sections: (1) the first section presents all species which are directly referenced in the HS, with commodity codes for all possible classifications of their products and treatments; (2) the second section lists all HS codes for fisheries and aquaculture products with an exhaustive and comprehensive description of each code; and (3) the third section is a new section of the HS Handbook, where photos of the most commercially important species are shown. Each image contains relevant information and singularities of each species – scientific name, FAO names, main characteristics, and distribution. -

No results found. What will be needed to realize the vision of a world free from hunger and malnutrition? After shedding light on the nature of the challenges that agriculture and food systems are facing now and throughout the 21st century, the study provides insights into what is at stake and what needs to be done. “Business as usual” is not an option. Major transformations in agricultural systems, rural economies, and natural resources management are necessary. The present study was undertaken for the quadrennial review of FAO’s strategic framework and for the preparation of the Organization Medium-Term plan 2018-2021.
