ProjectEnhancing Sustinable Agriculture and Food Security in Rwanda through Technical Assistance - UTF/RWA/037/RWA 2024
Also available in:
No results found.Rwanda has made significant strides towards its development goals over the past decade, with the agricultural sector playing a crucial role in the country's economy. However, despite improvements in crop yields, productivity for major crops like maize and beans remains at only 50 percent of its potential. Land fragmentation and challenging terrain, including steep slopes covering half of the country, pose further obstacles to agricultural productivity. Climate change-related events such as droughts and heavy rains exacerbate these challenges, particularly in rainfed production areas. Additionally, only a small percentage of land with irrigation potential has been developed so far. To address these issues, further investment is needed to increase farm productivity, strengthen the business capacity of small farmers, and enhance market orientation in production. The Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Food Security Project (SAIP), overseen by the RAB and supported by the WB, aimed to build on the success of previous projects, continuing capacity-building activities for farmers' organizations, increasing access to irrigated water, promoting market access and scaling up nutrition-sensitive and climate-resilient agriculture. Technical assistance provided by FAO through the accompanying TA-SAIP enhanced project performance by incorporating best practices, documenting lessons learned and strengthening the capacities of targeted beneficiaries, with a focus on supporting women and youth in agriculture and agribusiness. -
