Synopsis (short abstract) Invasive plant species affect human health, agricultural and other systems, and their impacts are second only to habitat destruction in terms of loss of biodiversity. These concerns have generated growing international interest in quarantine legislation concerning weeds (see definitions, pp. 3-5) and in weed risk assessment systems to prevent the introduction of new pests and to prioritize existing pests for control. Weed risk assessment is a new discipline and the first international symposium was held only recently in Australia (Groves et al. 2001).

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.

    A Joint Meeting of the FAO Panel of Experts on Pesticide Residues in Food and the Environment and the WHO Core Assessment Group on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) was held at FAO, Rome (Italy), from 21 to 30 September 1998. The FAO Panel of Experts had met in preparatory sessions from 16 to 20 September. The Meeting evaluated 28 pesticides, including one new compound and 18 complete reevaluations, for toxicology or residues or both, within the Periodic Review Programme of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR).
