Traditional foods, diets and food systems play an important role in people’s nutritional status. As the best products of traditional food systems, geographical indication (GI) foods have a great potential to contribute to healthy diets and curb non-communicable diseases. This paper presents five case studies around the world on the nutritional potential of registered GI foods and explores the link between the production processes and the nutritional composition of the final products. The nutritional characteristics of these foods can be largely attributed to their unique ingredients and production procedures, which are linked to their geographical origins. The paper also discusses the development of GI specifications to maintain and improve nutritional values, the role of GI foods in healthy diets, and the determination of food composition. Finally, suggestions on how to leverage GI foods for healthy diets are provided. -

2010Promoting the links between people, places, and agrifood products can be a tool for sustainable rural development in many rural communities of the world. In fact, origin-linked products show quality attributes linked to the geographical places and people as a result of specific local know how and natural resources, and over time, a collective reputation is being built, that is identified by a geographical indication (GI). The definition of this specific quality thanks to a code of practice and the collective management of the GI system are fundamental tools to identify and preserve natural and human resources thus enhancing economic, social and environmental effects. The aim of this guide is to provide local stakeholders with a conceptual framework, concrete illustrations and methodologies for the promotion and preservation of quality products linked to geographical origin and for implementation of GIs. The guide proposes a four-step process in order to strengthen the origin-linked quality virtuous circle. The material presented in the guide derives from experiences of FAO and SinerGI in this field. Identification of the links between the specific quality product and the local resources, Qualification with the code of practice and recognition of the GI as a collective territorial-based asset, Remuneration thanks to the marketing approaches and Reproduction of the local resources in a long term approach, are the key steps allowing for an economic, socio-cultural and environmental sustainability of the origin-linked production system. -

Strengthening the enabling environment for food security and nutrition
2014The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2014 presents updated estimates of undernourishment and progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) and World Food Summit (WFS) hunger targets. A stock-taking of where we stand on reducing hunger and malnutrition shows that progress in hunger reduction at the global level and in many countries has continued but that substantial additional effort is needed in others. The 2014 report also presents further insights into the suite of food security indicators introduced in 2013 and analyses in greater depth the dimensions of food security – availability, access, stability and utilization. By measuring food security across these dimensions, the suite of indicators can provide a detailed picture of the food security and nutrition challenges in a country, thus assisting in the design of targeted food security and nutrition interventions. Sustained political commitment at the highest level is a prerequisite for hunger eradication. It entails placing food security and nutrition at the top of the political agenda and creating an enabling environment for improving food security and nutrition. This year’s report examines the diverse experiences of seven countries, with a specific focus on the enabling environment for food security and nutrition that reflects commitment and capacities across four dimensions: policies, programmes and legal frameworks; mobilization of human and financial resources; coordination mechanisms and partnerships; and evidence-based decision-making.
