No results found.Despite a period of relative stability since the signing of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) in September 2018, more than 6.5 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels across the country (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification [IPC], January 2020). This is due to the cumulative effects of years of conflict and asset depletion, low crop production, climatic and economic shocks, limited access to basic services and the resultant increase in vulnerability and reduction in resilience. Almost 4 million people remain displaced, both internally and as refugees in neighbouring countries. This situation is exacerbated by COVID-19, which has indirectly disrupted food availability and increased food prices, as well as the surging and re-surging desert locust outbreak in the Horn of Africa, all of which are threatening the already fragile food security and nutrition situation in South Sudan. In the framework of FAO’s Corporate COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme and the United Nations Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19, FAO has revised its humanitarian response for 2020 to mitigate the effects of the pandemic and address the needs of the most vulnerable households. -

No results found.Somalia faces the triple threat of COVID-19, desert locusts and ongoing severe floods, with the number of people in severe acute insecurity expected to triple by September since the start of 2020. Against a population of 12.3 million, this amounts to one in every four Somalis facing acute food insecurity at crisis or worse levels and in need of humanitarian assistance due to the combined impact of these newly emerging and past shocks. Somalia had its first reported case of COVID-19 in March 2020 and cases have since continued to rise with 2 696 people infected as of 18 June 2020. Many aspects of life and trade that underpin food security in the country are being disrupted, including food imports, remittances and the livestock sector. The overall impact of COVID-19, including containment measures, are expected to be adverse considering that agriculture accounts for 65 percent of Somalia’s gross domestic product (GDP), while livestock is the second largest contributor; accounting for up to 40 percent of the GDP and more than 50 percent of the export earnings. In the framework of FAO’s Corporate COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme and the United Nations Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19, FAO has revised its humanitarian response for 2020 to mitigate the effects of the pandemic and address the needs of the most vulnerable households. -

No results found.The Niger has been facing multiple recurrent and persistent shocks (e.g. drought, insecurity, massive population displacement, etc.), significantly affecting agricultural and pastoral production, and increasing the levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. Following the first reported COVID-19 case in the country (20 March 2020), the Government put in place a series of urgent and essential health-related restrictive measures, the effects of which are still being felt even though the majority have recently been lifted. Disruptions to markets, food chain supply and trade could limit people’s access to sufficient and diverse sources of food, especially in areas hard hit by the virus or already affected by high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. In the framework of FAO’s Corporate COVID-19 Response and Recovery Programme and the United Nations Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19, FAO has revised its humanitarian response for 2020 to mitigate the effects of the pandemic and address the needs of the most vulnerable households.
