Synopsis (short abstract) The provision of financial services to rural smallholder households, including savings, credit, insurance and payments, remains among the most difficult challenges in finance and development. Despite progress in the extension of these services to rural areas, rural finance ecosystems in low- and middle-income countries remain fragmented due to high transaction costs associated with the uneven and disperse distribution of populations, inadequate infrastructures and unexpected threats to agricultural productivity. As a result, small-scale actors and most marginalized groups – such as women and youth – remain largely excluded from access to finance and investment. Developing and scaling up inclusive financial solutions is key to improve the livelihoods and resilience of the most vulnerable people, reduce inequalities and poverty, end food insecurity and malnutrition, and promote the sustainable use of natural resources in order to build sustainable and inclusive agrifood systems that leave no one behind.

    The purpose of this analysis is to present an overview of the status of agrifood systems in NDCs, as well as provide insights into the extent to which NDCs are contributing to the climate-resilient and low-emissions agrifood system transformations needed to achieve the Paris Agreement. It provides an overview of the major climate-related risks and greenhouse gas hot spots in agrifood systems, and it synthesizes the main climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies being set forth in the nationally determined contributions to address them. It also takes stock of the underpinning governance, knowledge and capacity and finance needs articulated to enable climate action in agrifood systems. Lastly, it highlights mitigation, adaptation and climate finance ambition gaps in agrifood systems to inform enhanced ambition, action and support.

    The global community has committed to responding to climate change while ensuring decent livelihoods and healthy food for everyone, keeping within planetary boundaries. Transforming agrifood systems is essential to meeting these challenges, with climate response being an intrinsic element. The need for more resilient systems that can sustain increasing demands in a setting of tightening constraints is evident. Resilience must be generated across environmental, social and economic domains, all the while maintaining the economic viability of agrifood systems to ensure that transition occurs in a just and fair manner. Climate technologies are a key enabler to support climate action and the sustainable transition of agrifood systems.The report highlights the needs for robust technology assessments to underpin climate technology identification for agrifood systems transformation that addresses all stages of agrifood value chains. This needs to be supported by capacity-building programmes, targeted financing and fed into the ongoing climate policy process. The capacity-building strategy and efforts are to be tied to the technology assessments, and identify suitable and correct skill sets, especially for smallholders and vulnerable segments of the population.

    The project’s overall aim is to contribute to the sustainable achievement of food security among rural Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanian hosts, by enhancing their capacity to successfully participate in efficient sustainable Agri-food systems and building their capacities for decent work opportunities as well as advocating for food waste reduction which has a profound effect on sustainbility,food security and rural development through training sessions. As such the project will address the capacity building, assets, financing, and employment needs of the targeted beneficiaries, through a series of activities related to capacity enhancement, asset distribution, access to micro-financing, access to markets, and job creation. The reader of this factsheet will be able to have an overall idea about the project's objectives, impact, activities and outputs in both English and Arabic. يهدف المشروع الى المساهمة في تحقيق الأمن الغذائي بشكل مستدام بين اللاجئين السوريين والمجتمعات الأردنية المضيفة في الريف من خلال تعزيز قدرتهم على المشاركة بنجاح في أنظمة الأغذية الزراعية المستدامة الفعالة وبناء قدراتهم من خلال برنامج تدريبي متكامل لخلق فرص عمل لائقة وكذلك الدعوة إلى الحد من هدر الاغذية والذي له تأثير عميق على الاستدامة والأمن الغذائي والتنمية الريفية. على هذا النحو، سيعالج المشروع احتياجات بناء القدرات والتمويل والتوظيف للمستفيدين، من خلال سلسلة من الأنشطة المتعلقة بتعزيز القدرات وتوزيع الأدوات والوصول إلى التمويل الصغير و إلى الأسواق وخلق فرص العمل. سيتمكن القارئ من تكوين فكرة شاملة عن أهداف المشروع وتأثيره وأنشطته ومخرجاته باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية.
