Book (series)Terminal evaluation of the project "Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change in the Gambia"
Project code: GCP/GAM/033/LDF - GEF ID 5782
2024Also available in:
No results found. The evaluation project “Adapting Agriculture to Climate Change in the Gambia (GCP/GAM/033/LDF)” found that it was, generally, satisfactorily implemented to achieve its objective to “To strengthen diversified and sustainable livelihood strategies for reducing the impacts of climate variability and change in agriculture and livestock sector”. However, implementation in the livestock sector faced challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and cumbersome procurement processes among others. The project built capacities of implementing partner institutions, CSOs and farmer-based organizations, and supported the establishment of vegetable gardens for increased income and nutrition security of beneficiary communities. The planned animal drinking points, if successfully implemented, will facilitate watering of animals, thereby increasing their production and productivity. Other established schemes like beekeeping, poultry and small ruminants will also contribute to increasing beneficiary income-earning capacities. Additionally, the upgrading of the National Environment Agency (NEA) Lab and training of staff has positioned the agency to contribute towards addressing climate change issues. -
Document52 Profiles on Agroecology: Climate resilient sustainable agriculture for adaptation to climate change in The Gambia 2017
Also available in:
No results found.Smallholder farmers in Gambia are increasingly facing climate related induced disasters and vulnerabilities affecting their lives and livelihoods. During 2010-2012, farmers faced flash floods, periods of drought, disease infestation, saline intrusion, deforestation and massive erosion of their farmlands resulting in crop failure and reduced food security. ActionAid has introduced agroecological approaches including disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate resilient sustainable agriculture (CRSA ) to support smallholder farmers adapt to these shocks and to reduce vulnerabilities. -
Book (stand-alone)The relations between climate change and child labour in agriculture
Evidence on children’s work trends after climate-related events in Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Nepal and Peru
2023Also available in:
No results found.Climate change-related events undermine children’s educational attainment, exposing them to child labour, hazardous work and forced migration. This nexus is particularly relevant for agriculture and its subsectors: indeed, they absorb about 26 percent of the economic impacts of climate change-related disasters and host 70 percent of all child labour. This study aims to identify the extent to which climate change-related events and impacts affect child labour in agriculture by exploring the underlying connection between the two challenges as the initial step towards integrating a child labour lens within the international community’s work on climate change. It showcases the multi-dimensional relationship through a mixed-methods approach in four countries: Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Nepal and Peru. The qualitative and quantitative findings propose a set of policy implications that are in line with the concept that one-size-fits-all policy prescriptions are unlikely to work, as they must be tailored to different communities based on their characteristics.
