This Ocean Guide was jointly developed by FAO and PML, with contributions from many other institutions. It is designed as an educational resource for schools, youth groups and other curious young learners. This fact-filled Guide explores the ocean from the coastal zones to the frozen poles, the deep sea to the open ocean. It takes a close look at the physical features and natural processes that shape the incredible plant and animal life to be found underwater as well as life-forms exposed by the tides. It also demonstrates the many benefits the ocean provides us, discusses the negatives impacts we unfortunately have on the ocean and explains how good management can help protect and conserve the ocean and ocean life. At the end of the Guide, inspiring examples of youth-led initiatives are provided, and an easy-to-follow action plan aims to help YOU develop your own ocean conservation activities and projects. -

The Forests Challenge Badge is designed to help educate children and young people about t he crucial role that forests play for life on our planet. It explains how forests provide essential ecosystem services such as clean air, water, and climate change mitigation. It also describes various forest resources and explains how millions of people worldwide rely on forests for their livelihoods. The badge describes the threats to our planet’s forests and what is being done t o protect them. This material is appropriate for use in school classes, Guide or Scout groups or youth meetings generally. It includes a wide range of activities and ideas to stimulate learning about the importance of forests, while motivating children and young people to help protect forests and become aware of the impacts of their actions on the environment.

Book (stand-alone)Water Challenge Badge 2013Developed in collaboration with United Nations agencies, civil society and other organizations, the United Nations challenge badges are intended to raise awareness, educate and motivate young people to change their behaviour and be active agents of change in their local communities. The challenge badge series can be used by teachers in school classes and by youth leaders, and especially Guide or Scout groups. This booklet includes basic background information on water, the water cy cle and how water sustains life, as well as outlining why humans need clean water and sanitation to stay healthy. The badge looks at the different factors which affect our water supply (such as over-use, pollution, natural hazards and climate change) and considers how water can be conserved and used more efficiently. Naturally, some of this material will be more appropriate for certain ages than others. Leaders should select the topics and level of detail most appropriate for their group. For example, you may wish to skip the more complicated issues with younger groups, but you will probably wish to conduct further research beyond the badge with older groups.The second part of the booklet contains the badge curriculum: a range of activities and ideas to stimulate learning and motivate children and young people to save water and engage in efforts to increase equitable access to clean water.
