Synopsis (short abstract) Multi-stakeholder collaboration is an important process that can serve as a tool and strategy to solve complex issues and problems such as transforming national food systems towards more sustainable outcomes. This guide aims to support stakeholders working at all levels of the food system in the implementation of actions to transform their food systems. Centered on 5 building blocks underpinning successful multi-stakeholder collaboration for food systems transformation, the guide uses these constructions to illustrate ingredients of the process and show the interconnectedness of the steps needed to be successful. The guide also contains two annexes with a list of tools, and assessment questions. Annex 1 highlights a range of tools to support facilitators and participants with deeper guidance on a specific topic. Annex 2 contains a checklist of questions, customized to the content provided under each Building Block, and serves as an ongoing monitoring tool that can be used alongside the recommendations provided.

    Eliminating malnutrition in all its forms is imperative to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. To ensure that food systems support healthy diets and better nutrition, it is necessary to strengthen the knowledge base and capacities of key stakeholders. With funding from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan, FAO is implementing a project in Ghana, Kenya and Viet Nam, with the overall goal of developing the capacities of relevant academic institutions and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in these countries to promote and adopt nutrition-sensitive approaches that contribute to making food systems conducive to healthy diets. The three expected Outputs can be summarized as follows: (i) to improve capacities of nutrition- and food science-oriented universities to transfer skills and competencies on nutrition-sensitive food systems and value chains; (ii) to scale up the capacities of SMEs to adopt nutrition-sensitive business approaches and practices through multistakeholder collaboration, including the private sector, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), and academia; and (iii) to develop an e-learning course targeting SMEs for the improvement of knowledge and skills on nutritionsensitive food systems, which will be disseminated in the targeted countries and worldwide.

    Multi-stakeholder collaboration for more sustainable food systems in the Mediterranean

    The main objective of this side event is to showcase food systems transformation processes and pathways in the Mediterranean, as a direct contribution to the UNFSS follow-up process, by fostering more knowledge sharing, leveraging new collaborations and partnerships, as well as, mobilizing more resources to further consolidate the joint SFS-MED Platform’s effort. Echoing the global objectives and efforts of the One Planet Network’s SFS Programme at regional level, the work conducted by the SFS-MED Platform focuses on leveraging cross-country and multi-stakeholder collaboration to advance sustainable food systems transformation in the Mediterranean region. The expected outcome is the consolidation of a Mediterranean collaborative way forward, embracing the concepts of blue, green and circular economy, fostering research and innovation, and leveraging the Mediterranean diet to bring about more sustainable consumption and production patterns, all key for achieving progress towards the 2030 Agenda in the region.
