Regional Wood Energy Development Programme In Asia - GCP/RAS/154/NET
2000Also available in:
No results found. In the Southeast Asian region, residues from the agricultural and forestry sector represent a large biomass potential. If all process-based agricultural residues alone were to be utilized, they would contribute between 25-40% of the total primary commercial energy production in various Southeast Asian countries. However, the successful utilization of these residues for electricity (and heat) production in large-scale conversion plants strongly depends on a secure fuel-supply. In the past, severa l projects faced difficulties such as limited accessibility, logistical problems, seasonal availability, increasing residue prices and increased utilization for other applications. It is therefore desirable to set up a methodology to assess these risks before investments are made. The objective of this paper is to develop a coherent methodology to set up fuel supply strategies for large-scale biomass conversion units. This method will explicitly take risks and uncertainties regarding availabilit y and costs in relation to time into account. It will mainly focus on residues from the agricultural and forestry sector. In order to demonstrate the methodology, a case study was carried out for the north-eastern part of Thailand (Isaan), an agricultural region. -
Journal, magazine, bulletinBulletinPacific Island countries: Impact of rising costs of food, feed, fuel, fertilizer and finance Bulletin, November 2022 | Issue #1 2022
Also available in:
No results found. The indirect impact of rising wheat prices and the impacts resulting from increased energy and transport costs and other goods are affecting Pacific Island Countries (PICs), significantly threatening Pacific governments’ ability to maintain their current food system pathways. As people in the Pacific struggle with covering the costs of rising food and fuel prices, their food security and livelihoods are put at further risk. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and other United Nations agencies, is supporting ten Pacific Island government authorities in increasing their technical capacity to analyse, predict, plan, and respond to the impacts of the global crisis of food, energy and finance on national food systems. The joint initiative aims at strengthening data collection and analysis, government capacity and cooperation with international financial institutions (IFIs) and development partners to understand, predict and respond to the impact of the war in Ukraine on agriculture and food security. This bulletin gives a snapshot of the on-going FAO and WFP joint work on data collection and analysis, reflecting unfolding impacts of the food, feed, fuel, fertilizer and finance (5F) crisis on agri-food systems in the Pacific throughout 2022. -

Also available in:
No results found. The FAO Expert Consultation on the substitution of imported concentrate feeds in animal production systems in developing countries was held at the FAO Regional office for Asia and the Pacific, in Bangkok, Thailand, from9 to 13 September1985. The rapidly increasing imports of cereals (and to a lesser extent of oil meal) for incorporation in compoundfeeds in developing countries responds to the application of classical systems established in and for developed countries. Compound feedstuff produc tion has risen at an average annual rate of approximately 15 percent since the mid-seventies. The number of feed factories has risen very rapidly although their installed capacities are more often than not under-utilised Apart from the fact that there is competitionbetween man and animal for the use of cereals in developing countries these tendencies make them more dependant upon imports (the total value of annual imports reached several billions of dollars in recent years). In sane cases gove rnmental subsidies for compound feed production may even discourage efforts aimed at increasing domesticfeed production and the search for alternative feeds. In this context FAO has on various occasions been requested by developing countries to assist in seeking effective substitutes for grain in animal feeding. This expert consultation aimed at: analysingthe present place of concentrate feeds in animal feeding systems in developing countries - proposing alternatives to imported feed ingre dients or compound feeds - analysingthe present place of the feed mill industry, identifying the problems arising from its development and considering the role it should have in the future making recommendations for the development of animal production systems more based on locally available feed resources.........

Book (stand-alone)Flagship2015–16
