Dicho deterioro ya era muy desalentador, y sin embargo tuvo un repunte en el 2009. Haber superado los mil millones pone de relieve la urgencia de encarar con rapidez y eficacia las causas profundas del hambre a nivel mundial.

    El Programa Especial para la Seguridad Alimentaria (PESA) es una iniciativa de alta prioridad de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) para contribuir al cumplimiento de los acuerdos de las dos grandes Cumbres Mundiales sobre Alimentación (1996 y 2002), y de los compromisos de la Declaración del Milenio de reducir a la mitad el hambre en el mundo para 2015. Está dirigida a apoyar a los países con Inseguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional, con especial ate nción a las poblaciones más vulnerables. En Centroamérica, inició su ejecución en el año 2000 en conjunto con los gobiernos de Guatemala, El Salvador, Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID) y el soporte metodológico y de coordinación de un Componente Regional. Asimismo, los PESA se articularon en el Programa España FAO que en Centroamérica se enmarca en la Iniciativa América Latina y el Caribe sin Hambre y en el Programa Global que promueve la incorporación del Derecho a la Alimentación en las iniciativas regionales de Seguridad Alimentaria y Nutricional. Hambre de Saber, Saber de Hambre nació como una iniciativa regional enmarcada en la estrategia de comunicación para el desarrollo de los PESA el análisis de sus causas y la búsqueda de soluciones a través de la sensibilización, la capacitación técnica, la investigación y la información.

    There has been a marked upward trend in production and consumption of fruits and vegetables in Asia and the Pacific in recent years. Along with rising consumer demand has come greater awareness of food safety issues and increased need for convenience and quality. Selection of high quality horticultural produce for processing and implementation of good practices during processing operations are required to assure both the quality of the produce and the safety of the final product. This technical guide reviews, from a theoretical and practical perspective, the critical issues that must be addressed for fresh-cut produce to meet consumer demand for convenience, quality and safety. A case study on fresh-cut processing in Thailand is included. The guide should be of practical value to small processors, trainers and extension workers who provide support to individuals engaged in production of fresh-cut tropical produce for sale.

    The 'JP GTA - 2022 In Review' offers a snapshot of the milestones, achievements and activities of the Joint Programme over the course of the past year, with links to articles, publications and event recordings. The report is structured along the four pillars of the JP GTA, with sections focusing on knowledge generation, country-level activities, capacity development and learning, and policy support and institutional engagement. The page on 'knowledge generation' offers an overview of resources published or facilitated by the JP GTA in 2022.     The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023
    Urbanization, agrifood systems transformation and healthy diets across the rural–urban continuum

    This report provides an update on global progress towards the targets of ending hunger (SDG Target 2.1) and all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2) and estimates on the number of people who are unable to afford a healthy diet. Since its 2017 edition, this report has repeatedly highlighted that the intensification and interaction of conflict, climate extremes and economic slowdowns and downturns, combined with highly unaffordable nutritious foods and growing inequality, are pushing us off track to meet the SDG 2 targets. However, other important megatrends must also be factored into the analysis to fully understand the challenges and opportunities for meeting the SDG 2 targets. One such megatrend, and the focus of this year’s report, is urbanization. New evidence shows that food purchases in some countries are no longer high only among urban households but also among rural households. Consumption of highly processed foods is also increasing in peri-urban and rural areas of some countries. These changes are affecting people’s food security and nutrition in ways that differ depending on where they live across the rural–urban continuum. This timely and relevant theme is aligned with the United Nations General Assembly-endorsed New Urban Agenda, and the report provides recommendations on the policies, investments and actions needed to address the challenges of agrifood systems transformation under urbanization and to enable opportunities for ensuring access to affordable healthy diets for everyone.
