Synopsis (short abstract) Rice has been cultivated for many decades in Fiji, and is a major source of food for its population. However, the country’s rice industry has increasingly weakened over these years, as the rice area and production has declined, while rice yield growth has been stagnant or marginal. As a result, the country has had to import more than 80 percent of the total rice demanded annually. Against this background, the Government of Fiji has committed to revitalizing the rice industry and ensuring the reduction of rice imports by 2020. The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of related government departments, staff and farmers, and to provide knowledge and skills to increase the production and productivity of rice crops in Fiji.

    Rice is Liberia’s staple food, but over 90 percent of the country’s rice needs is imported at the cost of about USD 80 million a year. Liberia’s population growth has given rise to an increase in the demand for rice. This increase, coupled with low productivity, has led to a deficit in national rice production, as demonstrated by the huge variance between imported rice and local production. In addition, the rice development sector of the country faces multiple threats that challenge the economic and food security of the population. Farmers are constantly experiencing erratic rainfall patterns and unprecedented sweeping winds and floods, resulting in crop failures. Against this background, production patterns in the country are semi rudimentary , and the lack of equipment for agricultural work is one of the main problems faced by rice growers. The project aimed to enhance smallholder rice farmers’ capacity to increase their productivity, through the introduction of modern rice varieties and production techniques, as well as agricultural equipment, in two of the country’s three ‘breadbasket’ counties, Bong and Lofa.

    Emergency assistance to households in Fiji after tropical cyclone Winston - TCP/FIJ/3504 2019

    Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston was one of the strongest tropical cyclones to make landfall in Fiji. The loss of food crops, livestock, fisheries and related infrastructures caused by the cyclone was extensive and a State of Natural Disaster was declared by the Government of Fiji on 20 February 2016. The objective of this emergency project was the rapid re-establishment of agricultural and fisheries production in the most affected households. The project aimed to provide the inputs and technical support needed to revive livelihoods and restore food security to households and communities in the most affected areas.

    This publication offers facilitators technical guidance to manage field farm schools to support local famers in all aspects of rice crop management. Technical knowledge gained by farmers will revitalize the rice industry in Fiji and assist food security by alleviating dependance on rice imports.
