The Republic of The Gambia, situated on the western coast of Africa, forms a narrow enclave in the Republic of Senegal except for a short seaboard on the Atlantic coastline. The population, very young, is now predominantly urban. Nevertheless agriculture remains a key sector of The Gambia’s economy and is the source of livelihood for more than three-quarters of the population. Economic performance has improved, but as yet, this has not translated into reduced poverty, which remains widespread an d severe, with about 60% of the population below the poverty line. Although a slight improvement has been observed since 2000, infant and under-five mortality rates remain high. A high maternal mortality ratio is also observed. Access to health facilities is relatively good, but poor quality of services reduces the effectiveness of the health system. Nevertheless, immunization coverage among children is expanding.

After becoming independent in 1991, Armenia suffered a difficult transition to a market economy. Factors such as the 1989-94 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, earthquakes and droughts further affected the socio-economic situation. Agricultural reforms implemented after independence did not succeed in enhancing the sector’s low productivity. Despite economic growth over the past eight years, the combined effects of mass impoverishment, rising unemployment and declining access to public services have led to a decline in the quality of life. Trends indicate that poverty could become structural.

Ghana is a small coastal country of West Africa well endowed with natural resources. The population is young and a high proportion is urban. Agriculture, which is still predominantly traditional, plays an important role in the country’s economy and remains the main sector of employment. Over the last years, Ghana has registered robust economic growth. While poverty still has a firm grip on the North, there has been a substantial decline in poverty at national level and the country is on track to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal if the current economic growth rate is sustained.
