    Guideline
Guidelines for risk-based fish inspection 2009
Fish and fishery products are nutritious and healthy and are an important source of food and livelihood for many millions of people worldwide. However, if such products are not handled and processed correctly the consumer may be at risk. Fish inspection is concerned with ensuring that the consumer has access to safe and nutritious fish and fish products, whether the fish is from domestic sources of supply, imported or to be exported to consumers in another country. The present guidelines are des igned to complement the FAO Risk-based food inspection manual, and consist of five main sections: 1) introduction, 2) important characteristics of fish as food, food safety hazards, and the risk-based approach to fish inspection, 3) key elements of the fish inspection process, 4) the knowledge and understanding required by fish inspectors in order to carry out their duties, and 5) sources of further information on the topics covered in these guidelines. Key references that provide more informati on on the topics covered in these guidelines and that are recommended further reading are listed at the end of the final chapter. These guidelines will assist fish inspectors to carry out these responsibilities and are designed to be used in conjunction with the generic food inspection procedures described in the FAO Food and nutrition paper 89 Risk-based food inspection manual.

Tracking progress on food and agriculture-related Sustainable Development Goal indicators in Europe and Central Asia 2025

The Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region is at a key stage of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, experiencing progress in various domains – albeit with some areas witnessing limited forward movement or minor reversals. Despite varying degrees of development across countries, the region shares common challenges in enhancing food security, ensuring health and nutrition and combating environmental degradation. Analysis of the 21 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators on food and agriculture for which FAO has full custodianship finds that the ECA region is close to the global trend or slightly better, especially in the field of reducing hunger. However, an important portion of the population in the region still struggles to access safe and nutritious foods, and great effort is needed to lower food prices, enhance nutrition education to encourage better food choices, and make agriculture more productive and sustainable through increased government spending. Efforts also are needed to decrease the gender gap in agricultural productivity to improve women’s access to legal land rights.Data play a critical role in driving progress towards the SDGs, as gaps in data availability and quality hinder effective monitoring and policymaking. This report advocates for strengthened data systems to support evidence-based decision-making and targeted interventions. Out of the 23 indicators and 53 countries analysed, assessment could be performed on just 70 percent of data, with information missing regarding productivity, the incomes of small-scale food producers, women's land ownership, food losses, and sustainable fishing. The limited availability of data disaggregated by gender or vulnerable groups also remains an issue in the region as a whole.

    Guideline
Global production from aquaculture is growing substantially and provides increasingly significant volumes of fish and other aquatic food for human consumption, a trend that is projected to continue. Although aquaculture growth has potential to meet the growing need for aquatic foods and to contribute to food security, poverty reduction and, more broadly, to achieving sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals, it is increasingly recognized that improved management o f the sector is necessary to achieve this potential. The application of certification in aquaculture is now viewed as a potential market-based tool for minimizing potential negative impacts and increasing societal and consumer benefits and confidence in the process of aquaculture production and marketing. These guidelines provide guidance for the development, organization and implementation of credible aquaculture certification schemes.

Global Forest Resources Assessment - FRA 2020 - Terms and Definitions
    Working Paper No. 188
    2018
FAO has been coordinating global forest resources assessments every five to ten years since 1946. The assessments have to a great extent contributed to the improvement of concepts, definitions and methods related to forest resources assessments. Strong efforts have been made to harmonize and streamline reporting with other international forest-related processes e.g. within the framework of the Collaborative Partnership on Forest (CPF), as well as with the partner organizations of the Collaborative Forest Resources Questionnaire (CFRQ) and the scientific community, all in order to harmonize and improve forest related definitions and reduce reporting burden on countries. The core definitions build on earlier global assessments to ensure comparability over time. Whenever new definitions are introduced or old definitions modified this is done taking into consideration recommendations from experts in various fora.
