Until about 2010, population growth rates in the region exceeded world averages. However, they are now at 1.13% per year in 2010-2015, below world values (1.18%) and expected to continue diminishing to 0.72% by 2030. In the past, Central America has shown the highest population growth rates within this region and the Caribbean the smallest, situations likely to continue until 2030. The LAC Region has also evolved in economic and social terms. Life expectancy in the region is above world averages , is constantly increasing and is comparable to that of more developed regions of the world. LAC countries are classified as ‘developing nations’ except for Haiti, the only LAC country considered among the least developed countries of the world. The LAC region shows many advances in social and economic terms and has ample physical space and good environmental and social conditions to further develop its economy and the production of food. There is, however, a lot of ground to cover to reach more rewarding quality-of- life levels, comparable to those prevailing in North America and in other OECD nations.

Standing tall: exemplary cases of sustainable forest management in Latin America and the Caribbean 2010

The diversity of forest management experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean shows that sustainable forest management is achievable and can be a highly competitive option in a variety of contexts. Communities, companies, NGOs and the state itself, which owns most of the forests in the region, have applied techniques and practices that have kept forests standing while at the same time obtaining economic benefits and contributing to global wellbeing. Some of these cases have made more progress than others towards sustainability and should serve as a guide for similar initiatives throughout the region and the rest of the world. The exemplary cases of forest management and cases with exemplary aspects that are discussed in this book indicate a paradigm shift in the region regarding natural resources management. Gone are the days when volume and price were the only things that mattered. The evidence that forests can be managed by applying sustainability criteria in different contexts, o n different scales and by different actors shows that good management can reduce deforestation, fight poverty and maintain environmental services. The cases presented here, as well as the many other undocumented cases that exist in the region, serve as inspiration to create new forestry policies that mitigate the impact of climate change.

The Outlook for Agriculture and Rural Development in the Americas: A perspective on Latin America and Caribbean, 2015-2016 2016
    Also available in:

In this, the sixth in the series of documents entitled “Outlook for Agriculture and Rural Development in the Americas,” the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) analyze the trends in, and outlook for, the macroeconomic and sectoral contexts, agriculture, rural well-being, and policies and the institutional framework in the sector. The document presents proposals for policies needed to enable the region’s agriculture to regain its former buoyancy and to enhance the development of rural areas. It also includes recommendations designed to mitigate the impact of the economic slowdown in agriculture, spur higher agricultural productivity in the region, foster the integrated management of natural resources, and facilitate the successful incorporation of family farmers, young people, and rural women into agricultural value chains.
