Synopsis (short abstract) Belize's coconut industry benefits from ideal growing conditions and increasing global demand for coconut products. With over 15 000 acres of plantations managed by 1 000 farmers, the sector exports to key markets like the United States of America, Canada, and Europe, where coconut oil and other by-products are recognized for their nutritional value. However, challenges such as fragmented markets, inadequate agricultural practices, and a lack of comprehensive data hinder the sector's full potential.This publication outlines the One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) initiative's strategy to strengthen Belize’s coconut industry. It emphasizes developing sustainable practices, enhancing public-private collaboration, and building a robust data collection system to drive innovation and improve coordination. With leadership from the Ministry of Agriculture, FAO, and regional organizations like Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and Inter-American Institute for Cooperationon Agriculture (IICA), the initiative aims to position Belize as a competitive player in the global coconut market.Targeted at policymakers, agricultural stakeholders, and international partners, this document highlights the transformative potential of strategic interventions. By addressing systemic weaknesses and fostering collaboration, Belize's coconut industry can expand its economic impact, ensuring sustainability and meeting growing international demand.

    Investing in farmers – or agriculture human capital – is crucial to addressing challenges in our agri-food systems. A global study carried out by the FAO Investment Centre and the International Food Policy Research Institute, with support from the CGIAR Research Programme on Policies, Institutions and Markets and the FAO Research and Extension Unit, looks at agriculture human capital investments, from trends to promising initiatives. One of the nine featured case studies is the Twigire Muhinzi National Extension System in Rwanda. Twigire Muhinzi is the government’s homegrown, decentralized and farmer-oriented national system based on two complementary types of farmer-to-farmer extension approaches: farmer promoters and farmer field schools. The model showcases how an extension approach can improve farmer skills, knowledge and empowerment and thus lead to enhanced adoption of relevant technologies and practices. In Rwanda, mainstreaming the farmer field school approach into the national extension system along with financial support from public-private partnerships contributed to its scaling up. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

    Well-funded agricultural research and development (R&D) systems play an important role in transforming agrifood systems and helping countries to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The advantages of investing in agricultural R&D are also clear from looking at the past, where a wide range of studies have clearly demonstrated the substantial benefits that resulted from investments in agricultural R&D. The importance of investing in R&D has also been highlighted by governments on numerous occasions in intergovernmental settings. Gathering, compiling and analysing multi-year, multi-country datasets on investments in agricultural R&D are complicated tasks that require a lot of meticulous work and dedication. Only a small number of groups have worked actively in this specialized area. In some cases, they have used different procedures for gathering data on public and private sector investments in agricultural research. This report reviews the current situation and trends regarding investments in agricultural R&D in the world and presents some clear results that emerge from recent studies.
