Synopsis (short abstract) Within the context of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference, the IAMCR Rural Communication Working Group (RUC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) awarded 2,500 USD to authors of research papers that advance our understanding of applications of Rural Communication Services (RCS), particularly in the areas of agriculture, family farming, natural resource management, climate change adaptation, food security, and disaster risk reduction and management. The award aims to recognize and further encourage scholarship that enhances our understanding of rural communication and RCS, particularly their application in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Anchored on the umbrella theme “Inhabiting the planet: Challenges for media, communication and beyond”, the following winning papers shall be presented at the IAMCR conference 2023 in Lyon, France on Wednesday, July 12.

    The International Association for Media and Communication Research - IAMCR - is the preeminent worldwide professional organisation in the field of media and communication research. IAMCR is offering several awards for members participating in the 2023 conference. The Rural Communication Services Research Awards, offered in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), provides support for the presentation of four papers that advance our understanding of applications of “rural communication services” particularly in the areas of agriculture, family farming, natural resource management, climate change adaptation, food security, and disaster risk reduction and management.

    The Global Action Plan of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019–2028 (UNDFF) recognizes the need to promote Rural Communication Services (RCS) to advance sustainable food systems. RCS comprise demand-led communication processes, media applications and institutional arrangements to respond to the needs of family farmers and rural populations in a sustained and inclusive manner. This report summarizes the results and takeaways of online consultations and a virtual Regional Forum on RCS for Family Farming in Africa, organized in 2022 by Yenkasa Africa, a regional communication initiative, in collaboration with FAO, farmers’ organizations, rural institutions and communication networks.
