ProjectFactsheetIncreasing Food Security and Sustainable Production for Rural Communities in Armenia - GCP/ARM/006/EC 2020

No results found.Agriculture is the main driver of the economic growth of Armenia. The country is prone to natural disaster, which pose serious threats to food security, rural livelihoods and agricultural development in the country. In an attempt to respond to the multiple challenges in the agricultural and rural sectors, the Government adopted the Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy of the Republic of Armenia 2010-2020 and its corresponding Action Plan, which place emphasis on both short-term (food security and productivity increase) and long-term goals (sustainable growth and competitiveness). Given the requirement for capacity development at policy, institutional and individual levels (both technical and soft skills), the Government realized the need for external support through the European Union’s European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development programme. -

Statistical Capacity Assessment for the FAO-relevant SDG Indicators 2018/19
2019The Office of the Chief Statistician (OCS) conducted the Statistical Capacity Assessment for the FAO-relevant SDG indicators in early 2019 to provide insights about member countries' national statistical systems in regard to their capacity to monitor and report the 21 SDG indicators under FAO custodianship. The survey collected information on the national coordination mechanisms for the SDG reporting, current data availability and plans for filling data gaps, and needs for technical assistance. The respondents were mainly the National Coordinators for SDG Monitoring or the SDG focal points nominated by the Directors General of National Statistics Offices. The results will assist FAO-HQ and decentralized offices in designing targeted interventions and mobilizing resources to support countries in collecting, analyzing and using the SDG indicators in decision-making. -

Combining cash transfers, productive assets and inputs distribution with agricultural and nutrition trainings for vulnerable rural households in Lori and Shirak regions

No results found.Armenia is a landlocked, upper-middle-income country with a population of three million people and a net importer of food. It is vulnerable to natural hazards, including floods and drought, which negatively impact the country's food security and nutrition, together with external shocks like global food price fluctuations. This promising practice documents an integrated nutrition-sensitive cash+ approach piloted by FAO in the Gyulagarak community in the Lori region, and in the Marmashen community in the Shirak region. The intervention was part of the project “Developing Capacity for Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Selected Countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia,” which started in 2016 and ended in 2021. The objective of this intervention was to support the economic inclusion of poor rural households and improve their food security and nutrition. To do so, the intervention leveraged the national social protection system by targeting beneficiaries of the government-run family benefits scheme. FAO complemented the cash transfers provided by the government programme with packages of agricultural inputs and training on agriculture, nutrition and financial literacy. This promising practice offers an example of the effectiveness of cash+ interventions in strengthening resilience, nutrition and food security. The main innovative element of this pilot was in fact the combination of social assistance and productive assistance for small-scale agriculture. The results offer a solid evidence base to advocate in Armenia and elsewhere for combining national social protection programmes with productive inputs for small-scale food producers.
