No results found.This policy brief is part of a series to present evidence from the strategies and praxis of the UN Joint Programme on Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment (JP RWEE). Based on case studies, experiences and evaluations from the JP RWEE, it draws conclusions and makes recommendations for expanding sustainable development and climate change policies and programmes, particularly for climate-resilient agriculture, that simultaneously advance rural women’s economic empowerment and protect the planet. It aims to enable international, national and local stakeholders to formulate evidence-based policies and practices that build on JP RWEE achievements to date, and also to address challenges and gaps towards the effective promotion of gender equality in a rapidly changing climate. -

This terminal evaluation covers the project "Mainstreaming ecosystem-based approaches to climate-resilient rural livelihoods in vulnerable rural areas through the farmer field school (FFS) methodology", funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The overall performance of the project is moderately satisfactory. The project is relevant in its response to climate change adaptation needs in Senegal. It is coherent in its design and is in phase with the Plan Senegal Emergent (PSE). The evaluation found that the project has contributed to capacity building of institutional actors and farmers organizations on climate change adaptation, resilience and gender equity. Notable results include: capacity building of technicians, relay producers, farmers and agro-pastoralists on good practices of adaptation to climate change, through the field-school approach; the establishment of a climate resilience fund that has allowed to finance micro-projects in rural area; the dissemination of agro-climatic information; trainings on adapted climate change practices at the farmfer field school (FFS) and agropastoral field school (APFS) level. -

No results found.The REEFFISH project aimed to enhance the resilience of fishing communities in five African coastal countries in the Western Indian Ocean region. The project supported sustainable coral reef fisheries management, strengthened marine protected areas (MPAs), and improved fisheries value chains. It also addressed illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and enhanced maritime safety. Implemented through national governments and NGOs, the project provided training, equipment and policy support.The evaluation reviewed the project’s coherence with global, national, and regional initiatives, its effectiveness in achieving results, and its efficiency in adapting to challenges. It also examined sustainability at community and institutional levels, inclusiveness in design and implementation, stakeholder engagement and coordination, and the adequacy of monitoring, evaluation, and learning mechanisms.

No results found.The amount of climate finance flowing to agrifood systems is strikingly low and continues to diminish vis-à-vis global climate finance flows. Agriculture is one of the sectors with the highest adaptation finance needs for implementing the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) but climate finance for adaptation is also on a downward trend. The diminishing trends of both agrifood and adaptation investments is a cause for alarm and a missed opportunity. This publication addresses the persistent knowledge gap related to climate finance to agrifood systems, providing data and information to support countries making informed decisions towards agrifood systems transformation. The analysis brings to light the evolution of climate finance in agrifood systems over the past two decades, showcasing unique sectorial analysis of climate finance allocations for adaptation and mitigation, delving into the diversity of actors involved, from bilateral and multilateral agencies to the private sector, highlighting the critical need for partnerships that transcend boundaries. -

Over the past thirty years, an increasing number of states have passed good laws that significantly strengthen the tenure rights of their citizens. However, due to multiple barriers, a high percentage of many nations’ citizens are either unaware of their legal rights or unable to use national laws to protect their rights when threatened. Legal empowerment efforts focus on strengthening citizens’ capacity to exercise their rights in a wide variety of fora, including in government administrative procedures, courts and tribunals, and when advocating for laws and policies. Legal empowerment is a key component of ensuring that the governance of land, fisheries and forests is responsible, equitable and just. Legal empowerment initiatives may include legal education; capacity development; efforts to shape state justice systems; legal support for citizens; and promotion of citizen participation in law-making. This legal brief outlines how state and civil society-led legal empowerment initiatives may contribute to the realization of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) and support greater tenure security, good governance, improved use of formal legal systems, and increased political participation by all citizens. -
