    El proyecto tenía la finalidad de abordar el problema de la inseguridad alimentaria en cuatro estados seleccionados del Sudán (Nilo Azul, Gedaref, Kassalay Mar Rojo). Ello conllevaba el fortalecimiento de la capacidad para establecer un orden de prioridades y formular políticas y estrategias relacionadas con la seguridad alimentaria, y la inclusión de estructuras de gobernanza a un nivel más bajo y los principales actores no estatales en los procesos de establecimiento del orden de prioridades y la adopción de decisiones.

    Information systems boosting food security in South Sudan - GCP/SSD/003/EC 2017

    The armed conflict that began in December 2013 in South Sudan has resulted in a weakening of government institutions, a breakdown in the provision of basic services, an economic crisis and severe disruption to livelihoods for a majority of the population. The cumulative effect of this has been severe and rising food insecurity across the country. The resultant post-conflict weakening of technical and institutional capacity has significantly eroded the Government’s ability to formulate and implem ent its national food security strategy. Consequently, food security interventions are now informed by Rapid Food Security Assessments and the more robust Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), both of which almost always result in short-term or emergency humanitarian responses. Addressing chronic food insecurity in South Sudan requires a robust food security information system and analysis framework.

    La Cumbre mundial sobre alimentación que tuvo lugar en Roma, en el mes de noviembre de 1996 reconoció la urgencia de mejorar la información disponible a los gobiernos, a sus colaboradores internacionales y a todos los actores de la sociedad civil en cada país, para orientar su acción contra la inseguridad alimentaria y aportarle toda la eficacia posible. La iniciativa SICIAV (Sistemas de información y cartografía sobre la inseguridad alimentaria y la vulnerabilidad) fue iniciada en 1997, entre u na veintena de organizaciones multi o bilaterales, inter o no-gubernamentales, para ayudar a los países afectados y a la comunidad internacional a identificar «quién dónde, y porqué? » se padece inseguridad alimentaria o existe riesgo de padecerla. El secretariado del SICIAV fue confiado a la FAO. Por un buen tiempo antes de la Cumbre, numerosos países habían comenzado a organizar redes multidisciplinarias al nivel nacional y local. Una de estas, desarrollada inicialmente en África francófona, l lena de rica experiencia para la FAO y basada en el apoyo y la participación, es la metodología SISAAT (Sistema de información para la seguridad alimentaria y alerta temprana), que este Manual propone como una herramienta metodológica a los actores involucrados en la lucha contra el hambre. Esta contribución a la iniciativa SICIAV es destinada a los técnicos nacionales que trabajan en el nivel central o descentralizado, así como a las organizaciones de asistencia técnica que colaboran con ellos. Se busca aportar a la vez una secuencia de acciones y un conjunto de herramientas útiles en las diferentes etapas.

    The need to reduce food loss and waste is firmly embedded in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food loss and waste reduction is considered important for improving food security and nutrition, promoting environmental sustainability and lowering production costs. However, efforts to reduce food loss and waste will only be effective if informed by a solid understanding of the problem. This report provides new estimates of the percentage of the world’s food lost from production up to the retail level. The report also finds a vast diversity in existing estimates of losses, even for the same commodities and for the same stages in the supply chain. Clearly identifying and understanding critical loss points in specific supply chains – where considerable potential exists for reducing food losses – is crucial to deciding on appropriate measures. The report provides some guiding principles for interventions based on the objectives being pursued through food loss and waste reductions, be they in improved economic efficiency, food security and nutrition, or environmental sustainability.

    The SWSR is a reference document on the status of global soil resources that provides regional assessments of soil change. The information is based on peer-reviewed scientific literature, complemented with expert knowledge and project outputs. It provides a description and a ranking of ten major soil threats that endanger ecosystem functions, goods and services globally and in each region separately. Additionally, it describes direct and indirect pressures on soils and ways and means to combat s oil degradation. The report contains a Synthesis report for policy makers that summarizes its findings, conclusions and recommendations.
