    La Consulta científica se celebró durante los dos primeros días del evento (29 y 30 de marzo) y congregó a todas las partes interesadas en la lucha contra el picudo (gorgojo) rojo de la palmera (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus). Autoridades nacionales, expertos y científicos internacionales, representantes del sector privado y organizaciones no gubernamentales celebraron amplios debates técnicos sobre la actual situación mundial, las dificultades que plantea la lucha eficaz contra esta plaga y las pos ibilidades de mejorar los programas destinados a tal fin. Además del estado de los conocimientos acerca de los actuales programas mundiales de investigación sobre el picudo rojo de la palmera, en la consulta se examinaron los adelantos realizados en la lucha contra este insecto empleando diferentes tácticas de manejo integrado de plagas (MIP).

    Si bien la malnutrición crónica en Guinea está causada por múltiples y complejos factores, la escasa productividad agrícola, la dificultad de acceso al agua potable, la insalubridad del medio ambiente, el crecimiento de la población, el bajo nivel educativo, las desigualdades socioculturales y la falta de ingresos contribuyen a la inseguridad alimentaria y, por tanto, a la degradación del estado nutricional. El objetivo del proyecto era mejorar la seguridad alimentaria y el estado nutricional de las poblaciones más vulnerables para la lucha integrada contra la malnutrición crónica, con miras a reducir notablemente su prevalencia, sobre todo en las regiones de Media y Alta Guinea.

    La cría de ganado y de aves de corral es fundamental para los sistemas agrícolas y los medios de vida de Ghana. En mayo de 2015, estos sistemas se vieron amenazados por brotes de la gripe aviar altamente patógena que hicieron que fuera necesario adoptar medidas para contrarrestar las pérdidas causadas por la enfermedad en las zonas afectadas y en otros lugares. Por lo tanto, el proyecto fue formulado con el objetivo de luchar contra la enfermedad en Ghana y, sobre todo, evitar su propagación a l as regiones no afectadas del país y a sus países vecinos, mediante una respuesta inmediata.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.

    The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018.

    Taro, Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott occupies a significant place in the agriculture of the Asia-Pacific Region. It is in this region, more than any other in the world, that the crop attains its greatest importance as a staple food. In Oceania particularly, taro plays a critical role in the household, community, and national food security. Since both corms and leaves are usually consumed, taro supplies much-needed protein, vitamins, and minerals, in addition to carbohydrate energy. The socio-cultural importance of taro in the region is very high. The crop has evolved to be an integral part of the culture and features prominently in festivals, social gift-giving, and the discharge of social obligations. More recently, taro has become a source of income for individuals, and an earner of foreign exchange. Its role in rural development has therefore been increasing, especially with respect to the provision of employment and the alleviation of rural poverty. Given the importance of taro, activities need to be geared toward its research, development, and available literature. This book is, therefore, a valuable and timely effort to fill some of the information gaps with respect to taro in the Asia-Pacific Region. Apart from a general coverage of the region, it delves into a country-by-country treatment of taro cultivation in 19 of the most important taro-growing countries in the region. The publication will be a useful reference source for researchers, extension workers, growers, and entrepreneurs who are interested in taro. The presentation has placed emphasis on clarity and simplicity to permit easy understanding even by persons for whom English is a second language.
