    As the Syrian crisis continues to escalate, the influx of refugees in neighbouring countries places an growing burden on affected areas. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) determined that Jordan hosts around 620 000 registered refugees, while the Government has estimated that there is a total of 1.4 million refugees in the country. In Mafraq, the refugee population lives in distress, while the broader population is also affected by the refugee influx. In December 2019, there were 75 993 individuals and 17 655 families registered at the Zaatari refugee camp. Stakeholders in the Zaatari community continue to pursue the creation of job opportunities for residents, with a record 13 220 active work permits being reached in October 2019. Although job opportunities are traditionally dominated by the agriculture sector, the waste sector offers potential for the development of additional “green” jobs. In Jordan, the level of municipal solid waste has grown rapidly over the past two decades, while the influx of refugees has exponentially increased its rate of production. Much of the solid waste produced finds its way to landfills, most of which are classified as unsanitary dump sites. On top of the strain being placed on the waste management system, the influx of refugees has also driven an increased demand for energy. This TCP project was therefore designed to make use of waste in the Zaatari municipality in the creation of sustainable job opportunities that promote compost production for agricultural purposes and the generation of energy.

    The contribution of agriculture to the economy of Mauritius has decreased over the years and was estimated at 3 7 percent of gross domestic product in 2011 Agriculture in Mauritius comprises a sugar sector and a non sugar sector The sugar sector in Mauritius was hit by European Union reforms that led to a reduction in the price obtained for exports of sugar to the European Union The non sugar sector of Mauritius consists of the food crop and livestock sectors In 2011 it was reported that some 4 300 ha of land were under food crop cultivation, compared to around 59 724 ha under sugarcane Faced by increases in global food prices, rising food import bills and high price volatility, MAIFS developed a Strategic Plan for the Non sugar Sector 2016 2020 This emphasized the production of a number of priority crops, sustainable agricultural development and the provision of more land for food production Mauritius’s forested areas account for approximately 2 000 km 2 of which about 25 percent is under plantation forestry, with the remaining area under secondary alien vegetation or native forest remnants The extent of reasonable quality native forest (i e with more than 50 percent native plant canopy cover) is currently estimated at around 2 600 ha, representing less than 2 percent of the total area of the island Around 47 percent of the forested land in Mauritius is state owned.

    The COVID-19 pandemic has had devastating impacts on the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) area, leading to an increase in poverty. There has been a significant loss in production, which has resulted in heightened vulnerability among farmers and their families. The effects extend to various aspects of life, including family income, nutrition, education and access to health services. The necessary COVID-19 pandemic containment measures, such as quarantines, travel restrictions and city lockdowns, severely affected economic activities in transportation, retail trade, leisure, hospitality and recreation. The situation for poor farming communities in the mountainous areas of CHT particularly worsened. Farmers have been facing significant losses due to the decreased prices of their agricultural products, especially seasonal vegetables and fruits. The prices of vegetables and fruits have dropped by 20 percent to 40 percent over 2020 in the CHT area, induced by the COVID-19 situation. Seasonal fruits, such as pineapples, were notably being sold at much lower prices than usual. This economic downturn has resulted in many farmers losing their livelihoods and experiencing food insecurity.
