Synopsis (short abstract) Participatory Video can be used as an interactive tool to promote more inclusive and sustainable forms of development mirroring local realities and sharing people’s values, cultures, and perceptions. Participatory Video production and sharing are part of a Communication for development process, grounded on a rural appraisal aimed at identifying communication problems and needs of the intended audience. Within this framework, video can play a significant role in sharing relevant information and knowledge among peers and while reaching out to interest groups through digital environments, such as mobile phones, social media and ICTs. Several rural institutions and farmers’ organizations require enhancing their capacity to use Participatory Video in a systematic way as part of inclusive rural communication services. In collaboration with the Digital Green and the College of Development Communication of the University of Los Baños in the Philippines, FAO has developed a modular training and is currently organizing series of trainings on Participatory Video. The intention is to assist extension services, farmers’ organizations, development institutions and programmes in adopting Participatory Video in fields like family farming and sustainable agri-food systems.

    Access to knowledge and information is essential to achieve sustainable agrifood systems, and such access has greatly advanced due to the widespread use of digital technologies.Nevertheless, digital exclusion and the lack of appropriate content are limiting factors, especially in rural areas, depriving smallholders of access to services and hampering theirdevelopment opportunities. To mitigate this divide, farmer’s organizations and rural institutions are increasingly utilizing low-cost digital media to ensure equal access to knowledge and information. This implies not only improving connectivity but also promoting digital literacy, developing farmer-centred rural communication services and ensuring that adequate content is available to rural people at the right time in the appropriate formats and languages.Participatory video can be used as an interactive tool to promote more inclusive and sustainable forms of development, mirroring local realities and sharing people’s values,cultures and perceptions. By adopting a Communication for Development (ComDev) approach, farmers’ organizations, rural institutions and practitioners can use participatory video to drive development. Thanks to digital tools, participatory video can be applied extensively to domains as diverse as innovation systems, digital marketing, policy dialogue, accountability and informed consent, among many others.

    Digital technologies for multidimensional youth engagement in agrifood systems transformation 2024

    Youth engagement is pivotal to the transformation of our agrifood systems. Simultaneously, digital technologies have contributed to the development of our agrifood systems and are an increasingly important part of young persons’ lives. Digital technologies can therefore play a role in youth engagement toward the transformation of agrifood systems. This report explores this question through a multidimensional approach, offering insights into how youth can (1) utilize digital technologies, (2) develop these technologies, (3) engage in activities and projects through digital tools and (4) participate in decision-making processes through the use of digital technologies, ultimately encouraging their active involvement in the transformation of agrifood systems. The Young Scientists Group (YSG) conducted a comprehensive literature review which highlights various relevant case studies, together with a survey capturing the perspectives and experiences of youth. The results show that, for agrifood systems transformation initiatives, digital technologies provide youth with benefits such as being able to conduct tasks more efficiently, reachwider audiences and form collaborations. However, there are challenges related to digital technology use including accessibility to these tools and the need for training and education in using them – both among youth and the collaborators they interact with. Additionally, although digital technologies can increase opportunities for engaging in decision-making, they do not necessarily ensure these. Based on the findings, we recommend policymakers and practitioners: (1) increase equitable access to digital technologies, (2) build capacities for digital skills development and training, (3) enhance youth engagement and inclusivity in decision-making processes which use digital technologies, and (4) engage youth in agrifood systems transformation initiatives involving digital technologies.
